Not a bad idea  Architect...Or so I thought at first....and then I got to thinking.....
(Yeah I know....it's a waste of energy on my part, that's for sure...hahaha)

Seriously though...please...don't any of you start jumping up and down and waving your hands in the air
yelling "Me...Me...I'll do it...."    It would not be easy...and in fact it would take a lot more time and effort
than most of us would care to think..a great deal more ! !

Where would one start?  By model...or engine size....or chassis number...or registration/year...? ?

And would one include all the options...ie sliding roof...armrests etc...whether factory/dealer fitted when new...or any added since ?
I'd say all of them.  And what about other additions...ie., non-factory/non-Smart produced...such as different alloy wheels...
different audio...different brakes...etc etc..

It really could be quite an endless and thankless task.  And very very very time consuming.

It could eventually end up like a sort of 'family tree' come central register...
It could even include details of when a car is sold (shame)...to whom it is sold...
or even when a beloved ForFour is 'no longer with us' for whatever reason.....(sob sob)

Is it beginning to sound like a nightmare now ?  A never ending one as every upgrade/update/change would have to be recorded/listed.
Any volunteer/s for this soul destroying task would do well to reserve a place in advance at the nearest mental institution.....
or ascertain where the nearest high speed rail line is.....or the deepest river...or the tallest buidling...or the cyanide.....or a gun....LOL

The architect didn't say he disliked the Coolstyle 95s he just said he wouldn't want one. I wouldn't want one either although I'm sure that those that have them are enthusiastic Forfour owners like the rest of us. The Purestyle and Coolstyle were attempts by Mercedes to improve sales by cutting prices and that meant reducing the specification. This was done because Mercedes got the original pricing wrong and the Forfour lost out to the well established competition at the time. I haven't got the exact details, but I think you'll find things like ESP, Softouch option and rear discs were among the items cut. The specification of most of our Forfours is part of what makes the car so attractive.

The later purestyle and coolstyle share a lot more in common with the Colt, ie discs and drums, some internal finishes, the exhaust trim on post 06 is different, etc.

Not saying the coolstyle or purestyle are bad, just not what I would choose. I was lucky with my Pulse, I know not many forfours have the leather pack option.

It would be a nice idea to see who owns what and what spec that model carries.

This is a good response....

Mine is a 55 Reg Pulse, with add on's as well....I have Passion Alloys, Air Con, Temperature and Fuel display information and the Lounge Concept.
I have added extras too like the parcel shelf, MP3 lead, Subwoofer, Rear Speakers and my ForFour didn't come with the Owner's Manual like most....I eventually found mine on eBay after searching for ages!

I would have no problem building a database that can be exported in many different formats so we can build some kind of information system on the different models of forfour, standard equipment and optional equipment and of course, who has what?

From this we can work out a whole lot more information about the cars in existence.

I am sure that most people's cars aren't standard factory fit models and have some little extras here and there...
I don't know if we need to move into other extras such as 'aftermarket parts and modifications' but those attributes can be added later.
It might be nice to work on those afterward to find out such information as Which model is most modified?

I will need a list of all the :

  • ForFour model editions (including engine sizes)
  • Factory standard fitments
and the
  • Factory optional extras

From this I can create the correct amount of entities and attributes for each car, design a form for people to fill in and then start inputting everyone's data.
I will of course add additional fields such as year of manufacture, but for now all I need is the details above.

I won't create anything as flash as an online input form because I don't have the time. Knocking up a database however, is no problem at all. I studied database design, ERD and suchlike and have all the software needed.
I create different databases on a daily basis for my work. As a matter of fact, I paused creating one for payment schedules right now to work on this post!

If people post this here, once I'm ready I will ask CrazyG if he could create and pin a thread for this information and from that, I will provide a form to him for everyone to post their information for our database.

Sound good?

my only question would be........

"what would it be used for??"

i think its a good idea but don't think it will bring any benefits really and don't want FOX to waste his time..

we could start a thread and see how much info we get.......

I think it would be a great 'information bank' for people to refer to as to what car has what, what car 'may' have what, what can be done to a car and just a full on technical database about everything forfour.

It's all about facts and figures. The amount of reports and graphs that can be created from a Database are quite substantial and to be honest, take no time at all to build.

If someone can supply me with the information I asked for, I can build a form for input and then we can start collecting data almost straight away.

This seems to be a hot topic on a lot of forums of late so had a nosey on Forfour's. Apparently in 2010 there were 332 passion CDi 95 left, which ain't bad as peak year there were only 339  ;D

In fairness we don't seem to have lost many but the rarest appears to be the coolstyle 95 with only 15 left.
