2012 Mongol Rally
« on: August 27, 2011, 06:44:08 PM »

OK, Here's the deal. 10K miles from Goodwood to Ulaanbaatar, leaving Goodwood on 14th July 2012 - and I've secured a place! All I need now is a team; and a car, and to raise at least £1K for Charity, by any means possible.

The Team - 'Team-Phoenix' - may be sorted.

The Car ? Still waiting on the final specification from the Mongol Govt, but looks like being less than ten years old and maximum 1300cc  - although this may drop to 1100cc.

Question.  Would a Smart Forfour 1.1 manual  put up with the punishment, or would a Hyundai Accent be better? Mountains, desert, tracks, pot-holes the size of buses and the odd paved road here and there!
www.theadventurists.com for more information.

... And if you fancy six weeks of pure adrenalin and want to be on the short list. PM me!
I'll also be at SmartFest 2011....

Team-Phoenix is based in Mid-Kent...

The forfour is very low and you'll surely hit something and possibly  break the gearbox or the oil sump. Maybe if you fit springs from the diesel variant and fit slightly taller tires all round it will gain 20mm, but even so, with all your crew and equipment inside it would too low.

Hi Nero

I did the mongol rally in a 1.2 suzuki wagon R (Team Hairy Legs!) in 2009 and it did a great job with no mechanical failings.  We liked it for its ride height and simplicity.  We installed a sump shield and fan override switch but the rest was left as standard.  We saw all sorts of cars make it and the smart would probably do it fine, just be careful over deep pot holes, we wouldn't have made it without a sump shield + good headlights are a must!!

Good luck and don't forget bog roll!
