Not sure where to post - A grinding noise?
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:21:11 PM »

Hello everyone

Purchased a used 04 forfour pulse 1.1 a couple weeks back. Had a high-ish mileage and lack of history, so I've taken it for an inspection at my local garage and a visual inspection at the smart dealership. They both said apart from the clutch being a little low and a loose heatshield (which I have taken off from the backbox and will replace), they cant find anything wrong.

I can hear a grinding sound, when pulling away, at lower revs and speed, especially if turning a corner like from a junction, I can hear a graunching drum kinda noise from the nearside front. It almost sounds like a wheel bearing going, if someone knows that sound, I jacked it up and checked for play/noise on the wheels, nothing. The garage couldn't find anything wrong and no play underneath at all. Smart couldn't find anything wrong and when I asked if it was just a characteristic, shrugged/almost nodded. It seems like an odd noise though and even if nothing is wrong, I would be intrigued in knowing what is causing the issue? Anyone heard of this one before?

I asked on another forum and they suggested pads rubbing, so I took off the wheels, cleaned it down but the sound it still there.

On a side note, so I dont have to start another thread:
- What oil does everyone use in their forfour?  5w30? 5w40?  0w30?  The manual is a bit vague.
- My driver door sometimes doesnt close and I have to wiggle the interior handle.  I tried a bit of wd40 all over, no difference.  Is there an easy to follow, pic guided previous thread?  I cant seem to find easy instructions anywhere.

http://www.forfour.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=116.0 that link will likely help you with your door closing. I had to replace the whole lock mechanism in mine which wasn't difficult, other than very right access which scratched my hands apart.

As for oil, use a decent 5w30 and you'll be fine. I use shell helix ultra, but I have a brabus so something a bit cheaper should do you.

And the rubbing/grinding noise does seem like rubbing pads. How do you mean you cleaned them down? If they're rubbing, cleaning them wont stop that. Could be stuck caliper or worn pads.

Re the grinding noise....as funky has already stated, just 'cleaning' the pads doesn't do it.
As a suggestion....
It may be that the rusty edges of the disc are catching the rear/back shields.....which is a
common complaint or problem on the ForTwo.  Jack up the front of the car and spin each front
wheel and listen for that sound.  Next, remove the first front wheel and then with a heavy duty
file, have a go at the outer/extreme edges of the disc....remove some of the rust all the way
around on both sides of the disc. Replace the wheel and spin it by hand and listen for any
noise/sound. Hopefully it will be silent. Then go thru the same process on the other side.

Failing that, have the condition of the CV joint checked out.......it's rare for it to be that as the
usual sign is a noise or noises on full steering lock, but it may be worth checking anyway.
