Non starting forfour
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:47:04 AM »

Good morning all, I'm new to smarts so please be kind. A friend of mine has a 2004 1.3 smart forfour pulse, and it won't start. I have done some trouble shooting so far, disconnected Fuel feed line to injector rail, no fuel flow. I have spark, I disconnected fuel feed line from tank, again no fuel flow, so I'm thinking fuel pump, or fuel pump relay. Now here's where I'm stuck, I found a fuse box behind the glove box, checked fuses all ok, I had no relay diagram so have no idea what relay feeds what. But, I can't get to the fuel pump... Does the tank Have to come out?  I'm hoping there is a common fault and it's a relatively easy fix, I guess it also could be the crank sensor, but I'm hoping one of the smart genius here can kinda help. Oh and I removed the passenger seat cos someone told me there is a secondary fuse box under it, but I found nothing but and old pen and a heater vent.
Thank you all in advance, Soccy :)

how old is the battery?

could be an immobiliser issue?  have you tried the other key?

Is there fuel in the car? The fuel indicator is known to go bad, it might show you have petrol when it's bone dry.

What are the symptoms? Does the car crank and not start?

How did it start? All of a sudden one morning dead smart, or were there hiccups before that?

Hi, yep I have fuel in the tank, or at least some, as I disconnected the fuel line and sucked on it whilst cranking and got a mouth full of fuel. The car cranks over but will not start, before it failed to start about 3 weeks before she had a check engine light come on, that lasted a few days and went away, then after driving home from work she parked it up, went to use it a few hrs later and it will not start. It cranks and cranks but won't fire. I removed battery cleaned any earths I could see, charged battery and tried again, but it still won't fire. I've not tried the spare key actually, never thought of that, will try it, cheers all.

So, I'm wondering if any fault codes have been searched for via the obd2 port? Your main dealer will do that for you using Star diagnosis, at a cost... and of course you'll have to get the car to them. Or maybe you have an independent smart garage on Jersey? Good luck.

Checking with the spare key is a very good idea.
It s rare that a keyfob becomes 'unsynchronised' with the
imobiliser, but trying the other key will identify that if it
works ok.
Oh, and I can't imagine the battery in the existing keyfob
is dead as you would not be able to lock/unlock the car if so.
however, I'd still check to ensure that the indicators only flash
once when you disarm/unlock the car.

Other than that, if it is the fuel pump, then there is a HowTo guide
for that....http://www.forfour.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3434.0
