The standard towing eye bolt should be more than long enough
to fit a tow rope/hitch.
I have seen the odd one where a dealer has removed the original
after the vehilce has been towed in, forgotten where he put it at
the end of the day, and popped into the wheel well a towing eye
from a ForTwo (450)...which is shorter and totally inacceptable to
use on a ForFour (454).
(One of my 454's had a 450 towing eye in the rear wheel compartment
which I only found out about when I went to check the tyre pressure
of the spare wheel....I saw that it didn't 'fill' the space in the molding)

this is the type of tow strap i have and id like to use the original location to fix it but i dont want to start chopping any panels, so if i can get an adaptor would make it easier... fit the adaptor then fit the strap to that.

Just take your existing metal eye to a fastener supplier and buy a bolt with the right thread .Saw apiece of tube to the right length to act as a spacer and you will be able to fit the towing eye of the type now outlawed in Motorsport
