So, booked up a couple of track sessions at Silverstone yesterday during the MotorsportDays Live show. Plan was to get the 454 mapped at S2 Smarts and go and have a play for a couple of tracks this month, then strip it right out and turn into proper track/race car
Best laid plans and all that - looks like someone had tried remapping before, but she kept leaning out on fuel. S2 tried loads of stuff, but all to no avail - looks like I need a turbo and actuator to move forwards so didn't look like we could play
Woke up Saturday morning, far too wet to take the Elise, and as my son pointed out, there's too many things you can hit at Silverstone to risk the CLA45. What was the worst that could happen if we took the smart? New engine to add to the already needed new turbo? And she's coming apart for winter anyway
So we took the smart - it wasn't pulling well on the corners but was so wet that power wasn't any use anyway, most corners were done on light throttle and feeding in a bit more gently. Only down the long straights was it a problem as plainly not pulling, although we were still doing 110 coming into Stowe in very wet conditions
We achieved the main mission, to understand how the 454 behaved on track. The rear stayed very planted, the front understeered as expected but proper suspension and some decent tyres will sort that, but all in all the car was nicely balanced and overtook a lot of stuff that should have been quicker in better conditions
