colour polish conunderum
« on: December 23, 2012, 03:28:17 PM »

as many know i have a titanium and flame red forfour (pictures in the link are about 1/2 way down http://www.forfour.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2040.msg21562#msg21562) and when i was a valeter for a month the lad who i was working with said that if i use colour polish it would give the car a deeper shine. now in the pictures in the link above the trid was done with the silver polish and the 'orange' parts done with 'normal' polish and finished with auto glym HD wax. iv been looking for a colour polish for the panels of my forfour but I'm unsure which colour to get... if i get the red polish the red shades dont match my panels and its the same with the yellow polish. which leave the question what colour polish can i use with my orange pannels. and if i carnt find any polish what polish can i use for a deeper shine?

Any professional valeter worth their salt will tell you (and show you) that they prefer not
to use 'coloured' polishes. They have 'gear' that can mildly cut and 'move' colour already
on the panels so that it appears to fill them in when in fact it smoothes any edges so that
scratches don't show up anywhere near as much...in fact hardly at all. But for real damage
they obviously recommend a panel be sprayed.
The guy who did my silver Brabus at an open day had done my Star Blue ForFour previously,
and he used exactly the same 'gear' on both cars. No coloured polishes at all.
And he is real pro....he 'trades his profession' in London and does Ferrari's, Porsche's, Lambo's
etc etc. He will spend up to a day and a half on a single car...he even takes photos before and
after so that he can see what each panel was like before. It is also useful if he get's a 'dipstick'
who tries to blame him for any marks etc on the car....Some have tried !
Anyway, some of the gear he uses is phenominally expensive, and some he just uses one drop
of for an entire panel...it's that good and that expensive !
I also saw the results of his work on a ForTwo cabrio roof.  He poured a 2lt bottle of water
over 2 roofs. One he had done, the other not. On the 'not done' it absorbed a lot of the water
and it was very wet to the touch. With the 'done' roof , the water 'slid' off, none was absorbed,
and it was bone dry to the touch immediately !

I would also say that a clear polish is also the ideal.

You don't want to be "covering up" the imperfections!

Rinse/Snow foam, Clay bar all the surface bits off, You need to take off the current polish and surface scratches with a cleaner fluid, dry and then use a high quality polish. Apply with hand/pad and polish and buff!

The only time I'd suggest the use of coloured polish is in the case of faded red panels, which it will help bring out nicely without much cost to you.

For yours, I'd say that although the red might not be a perfect match, as long as you do all the panels that won't matter.
