Got myself a Brabus ;)
« on: May 22, 2013, 10:48:31 PM »

I put a deposit down on a Brabus today and can't wait to get it. I have a few mods in mind already such as Bosch wipers, brighter lights, K&N and aux cable. I believe it has the Radio 6 the version with the buttons either side. Where is the best place to pick up one? As for the bulbs I have been down the road of HIDS on the Roadster and tbh I rather just have whiter lights than stupidly bright/ MOT failures. As for the K&N is it just the filter you can buy?
I would really appreciate what everyone would recommend as I want to get them ordered up in time for when I get the car :)

Regards
Dan

You can buy just a drop in replacement pannel filter, but it won't do anything. Paper filters flow very well, have excellent filtration and  are economical (even though the K&N is for life, you also have to buy the cleaning kit, and those two cost more than 5-6 paper filters that last you at least 3 years, if not 6 depending on your mileage)

The filter cone however has seen improved power in JJ's at least (although he doesn't have a K&N), perhaps due to the brabs fueling.

So far so good with the replies.....
JJ actually has a Powertec conical filter.....a metal mesh that just needs cleaning
when it gets dirty, unlike a K&N which needs a re-oiling as well and so works out
more expensive.
If you intend retaining the standard airbox then ther is a multitude of choices of
replacement filter.
Multilayer foam types (that 'inherently' may just use a blast with an airline to clean them)
Pipercross (from Smartmods),  ITG.
Cotton type..(that need soaking/cleaning/drying/re-oiling, which adds to the overal cost)
BMC, GreenCotton, K&N.

As for headlights and HID's....the brightest and whitest light is from the 4300k bulbs,
BUT... most 'muppets' buy the highest output as they think that the more 'k' it has will
give a brighter light....which are the one's that give off that ghastly blue that so annoys
other road users and is instantly recognisable as being a 'conversion' job.
If you do order HID's, (from a well known/decent supplier) ensure you order the matching
relay loom to go with it as this will more or less stop the flickering startup, and 'hide' the
ballasts inside the wheel arch covers. If you have read the HowTo's etc you'll know what
we mean by that .
If you decide against HID's, PIAA's are good, though over double the price of any one elses.
You could try Osram Nightbreaker Plus instead...(ensure they are the latest 'Plus' version).

Good outfit....and one I have bought HID's and the relay loom from.
Ensure you specify the 4300k bulbs in the option/order.

One issue though...they don't appear to have the relay loom showing anywhere !
I've looked around the site and naff ! I'd contact them and mention that....and that
you want/need it but can't order it if it's not showing on the site.

As per my post (before JJ's), HIDs-Direct don't appear to list the relay+loom
on their website like they did before....and neither do they list it on eBay....
I wouldn't recommend you buy/use anyone elses, in case there's a problem.
which was why in my earlier post I said...'contact HIDs-Direct and ask'  >:(

A relay loom is just a simple 4 pin relay, an inline fuse holder, plenty of terminals that fit over the relay pins (bulbs have the same dimension pins so you'll need 4 there as well, plus you're likely to drop a few and never find them again :)) ), and a length of wire. You can buy these yourself from anywhere you wish, and add the relay to any hid-kit, cheap or expensive. I have the best cheap HID-s but without a relay kit and i suspect one of them has burnt out my headlight adjuster motor on one of the headlamps. (quite a common bug of hids this).

So buy the best kit you can find + a relay (30A) and fuse holder (with a 15A fuse) and some reasonably thick gauge wire (hids draw a lot at startup, so make sure the wire can carry at least 15A as well). Use one of the headlamp plugs that power the dipped beam to command the relay, power the relay straight from the battery with +12 (Place the inline fuse close to the battery end of the wire) and from the other pin of the relay you power up the hid ballasts. Ground them to the chassis.

And that's it, the rest is just connecting the hid bulbs to the ballasts, and tucking everything away, mounting it securely, vibration free (I use some of the foam in the hid box to dampen vibration), place them away from splash zones, and you're good to go. Check headlight aim, preferably aim them a bit lower and more to the side of the road not to upset the drivers coming the other way :)

Hid relay kit

eBay

Aim to pay about £10 max (I paid a few £)

You don't need the kit really but it makes sense to have it.

What with it being a Bank Holiday weekend I suspect you'll not hear anything till Tuesday
at the earliest.

As Alex has said...you could 'DIY' you're own relay n loom, but if you're not confident
doing that (as a lot of people are not), then a complete 'pack' is the best answer.
