What’s the worse case scenario?

As I’m sure many of you may know some of us have been suffering from temperamental fuel gauges. I have had the pleasure of running out of fuel on different occasions and yes before you ask I do use the trip! My question is this what issues would the engine be suffering it has had run out of fuel? Reason I ask is I have noticed today that on start up you pull away through the gears and it is sluggish. If I rev the engine not even excessively and release the accelerator the needle goes up the revs but then when coming down it bounces like the engine is being starved. Tomorrow I will be attempting to sort the fuel gauge and hopefully it will work!

AFAIK, not a big deal on petrol engines. Super bad for Diesel engines as it needs to be bled out of air in the system.. Correct me if I'm wrong..

It shouldn’t be an issue

I am not mechanic but I think on any kind of car with fuel pump in fuel tank (ForFour), you shouldn't go to empty too often. It will fry fuel pump nicely.

What's more. Good habit is to keep tank half full and more to not let moisture condense in fuel tank.

If you've not found time to get round to that, I do hope that you
are now keeping a VERY watchful eye on the trip meter and adding
more fuel after you've done 150 miles since you last filled the tank,
ensuring you don't run it dry as on previous occasions.
