i payed £30 and had it done at mercedes of leeds.
it failed on a bulb and the good old MOT checker of the direct gov has told me it was
the R/F head light bulb.
oh and one more thing the term offside and nearside should be scrapped...
reason being, you get a L/H/D car (early smart car) and they say it fails on say,
the 'nearside rear' brake bulb. well that would mean its the R/H brake bulb that has
failed... but no its the L/H bulb, so i have alwayed used L/H and R/H on a left hooker
nearside is then on the offside and vice versa

mr singh I have to correct you as your interpretation of the terms of nearside and offside are incorrect.

The terms nearside and offside are relative to the where the car is on the road; under normal driving conditions; as in distance from the kerb.
So irrespective of whether a car is LHD or RHD, in the UK the nearside is nearest to the kerb, and the offside is furthest from the kerb.

So no....keep the nearside and offside terminology.

Baggy's looks great but it would have to be for another passion of a similar spec. The swap may come when I search for one for my mother-in-law as she is mad about blue and ours has a lot of it.

G - if you think of it natively, it can be a bit silly.
Yes Mr Singh was incorrect but I still think his basis for his distinction (and mixup) between the two is right - based on native conditions for those cars.

in a right hand drive car -
when you're driving as we do on the left, nearside is passenger closest to the kerb... (as the car is designed to be)
when you're driving as the french do on the right, nearside is driver's to the kerb...

in a left hand drive car -
when you're driving as we do on the left, nearside is driver's closest to the kerb...
when you're driving as the french do on the right, nearside passenger's to the kerb... (as the car is designed to be)

It's all relative to the vehicle, where it was designed to be and where you are.

In the UK, fine. Nearside is kerbside and offside is furthest from the kerb.
But when you drive that car out of the uk into the eu or from the eu into the uk... all is reversed.
Just imagine trying to explain a crash using nearside and offside to a european recovery driver/mechanic on your right hand drive car when you're on holiday... or when trying to order parts for your car from germany... nearside to him is different to nearside to you.

With the 'Left and Right' designation, people may say - is that driver's perspective or looking at the car from outside?
.... but then again, we globally reference from the interior as 'LHD' and 'RHD' so that reference point is static on all cars, wherever the car was from and whatever country they are in.

To be honest Fox even the terms Left and Right can be ambiguous.

If you view the car from the front then in the UK the 'nearside' wing is on the right,
but if you view if from the back of the car, the 'nearside' wing is on the left....
The same would be true of the opposite side.

Perhaps we should re-vamp it all so that nearside and offside, left and right are no longer used,
and replaced with LHD passenger side or drivers side and RHD passenger side or drivers side.

But you know what, people would object to that as well, so maybe we should forget this whole thing.
(Thank God there's not this same confusion over front and back/rear !)  ::)

Exactly as i said! it can be confusing, but again, as I said, since we globally label LHD and RHD as in reference to the driver's seating position the side of the car is in reference to when you sit inside it.
I think it's the most logical as it works alongside a global identifier and as such I use that terminology as well as near/off and usually in the same sentence.
