Software update for Neutral to Auto not Neutral to 1?
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:38:21 PM »

Is there a TAN code or software update for the Forfour which means the car will go into A (auto mode) once you move from N rather than going from N to 1 as it does now?

My Roadster had a software update and would move off in Auto unless you switched to Manual

Thanks!

The electronics on ALL the semi-auto Smarts is quite novel.....it learns your driving style.

Firstly, the factory default is always start in A from N.
If you always start in A (which is the default) then that will be your default.
If on the other hand you have always started in 1 from N, then after a while it will remember
to always select 1 when you move the lever from N into forward ('drive').

In addition, it also learns and remembers how you drive, and at what speed/revs to change up.
So if you drive hard and fast, it will after a time, remember to change up through the gears
at high engine speeds, but if you are a more gentle driver it will remember, after a while,
to change through the gears earlier.

So...on the basis that most of us are not the original owners, all the semi-auto's will be
working on settings 'learned' from the original 1st owner !

If you want to 'reset' this, you have to disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes to 1/2 an hour
so that the 'memory' is 'dropped', then reconnect the battery and it should have reset back to
the factory default (of A) and be ready to be 're-taught' your particular driving style.

As a final point, any software upgrades will flash the 'memory' to the original factory defaults.

Firstly I disagree about it learning what you start up in... the first year or so I was driving in auto and it always went from N to D then nudge it across to select A. A lot of semi-autos have the selector go to auto first then have a separate 'gate' for shifting, so the forfour is fairly unique that it selects 1 first.

Okay just read the manual...

"softip*/softouch*
􏰁 Apply the footbrake.
􏰁 Pull the gearshift lever out of position N to the left into the centre position D.
> Gear changes will be performed automatically (softouch) on versions with 80 kW engines. An A appears in the gear indicator.
> Gear changes are performed manually (softip) on all other versions. A 1 appears in the gear indicator.
>Note!
To change between softip and softouch, move the gearshift lever briefly to the one touch position A. To change over from softouch to softip, you can also move the gear shift lever briefly towards + or -.
􏰁 Release the footbrake.
􏰁 Apply pressure to the accelerator pedal gradually. > The car will move off."

So only one engine, I believe its the 1.5l petrol, selects A from start.

OH and its called 'fuzzy logic' how the car 'learns'.

I'd agree with that, always started in 1 on my 1.3

I stand corrected Messrs The Architect and BlackDog....
I should have read the handbook before commenting.
However....my 'weasel'  always used to select A when I first got it  ??? weird eh ?
that was until I fitted a new battery (didn't fit it for about an hour) and then i
started 'forcing' it to go into 1....now it selects 1 everytime.
