New Owner - Couple of queries...
« on: March 05, 2012, 08:46:38 AM »

Morning All

OK, so after some help from you guys I am now the proud owner of a 1.3 manual passion in bay grey/silver. All seems very nice apart from couple of issues...

- Intermittent mode on wipers d 8)the top by the window 1-2cm gap from rubber to glass
- After stopping for fuel, when I restarted there was now throttle, then engine management light - after searching on here appears to be TVA?

The only other thing is it sounds a bit throaty/burbly? Similar sound to my sisters 3 cylinder aygo, except I thought 1.3 was four cylinder? Is it supposed to sound this way?

Anyway looking forward to many happy years ownership!

Cheers
Damian

Second issue is a symptom of a dirty throttle valve actuator, search TVA on here, it has been discussed at length. First issue, i didn't quite understand, do the wipers not cover the entire screen area? Are they 650mm + 450mm units? Because that is the propper size for driver/passenger wipers.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I will search for TVA, think I did find something last night.

Sorry, my post seems to have got a bit messed up, should have said...

- Intermittent mode on wipers does not work, they stop mid way through sweep, then go again, stopping in another random position.
- The passenger door appears warped at top (or badly fitted?) There is a 1cm gap from the rubber to the bottom of the window.
- After stopping for fuel, when I restarted there was now throttle, then engine management light - after searching on here appears to be TVA?

The f*ck is that ::)

There's something stuck behind the door skin, or it's not popped in properly. Get in warmed up nicely in that area with a hair dryer, and put your knee on it, push it towards the window and a bit upwards if you can, and pray it pops in.

Looks like the owner definitely wanted shut of that one! Did it have any service history?

Looks like several jobs have been given little attention, nothing major, as Alex says that door is not normal!

TVA clean out should do the trick, clean the MAP sensor as well.

The 1.3 is not a very refined engine (quiet and sedate) its a noisy revvy little thing but TBH that's why most of us 1.3 owners love it to bits, I have often worried about Cylinder head gasket on mine as the older it gets, the more gurggly it sounds, but am unsure as to whether that actually is an issue or not.

The wiper could be old wiper blades if its getting stuck or maybe the symptom of a failing wiper motor, mine did that on the rear before stopping completely!

I am sorry that you haven't been lucky with your purchase, but all issues can be sorted out on this car with basic mechanical skills, most mechanics love the simplicity and their layout!

Door - bad refitting after cable replace
(we have a guide)

Engine - bullet proof but give the TVA a clean with some carb cleaner - only takes 30mins
(we have a guide)

Wipers - buy a new set (Bosch aero twin retro fit)

Cheers for the tips!

I am very happy with the purchase overall, and don't consider myself unlucky. Has some history, cost £2800, and overall is in very nice condition. I have a friend who owns a garage who can service for me, but I will have a fiddle with the few bits that need cleaning/adjusting.

All of this brings back many happy (and unhappy) memories of my early Smart/roadster years!

I only meant unlucky in that it has a few issues, but for the price you paid then its gonna have them i guess, a good one is still around £700-£900 dearer so i guess if it costs you much less to sort out which it should, then you will be ok.

The badly fitting door skin looks like it has been removed at some stage. As JJ has said..possibly
to fix or replace a cable.  Look around on Exterior section Technical Guides for that thread and
remove/loosen the handle so you can have a looksee, and then maybe see why it's not fiting/fitted
properly. Should be a simple job to correct that.
As to the intermittent sticking...hmmmm...
If wipers work on slow and fast and 'flick' one wipe then I really wouldn't worry too much about it.
A pain, obviously having to flick to wipe every now n then...but otherwise it could be a new stalk
is needed...or the intermittent relay perhaps. Neither of those is going to be cheap.

Where about is the gap that you were talking about with the rubber and the window?
