The forfour is going to grand garage in the sky!
« on: April 11, 2012, 05:41:45 PM »

My forfour is being put to sleep, anyone know what a good scrap price is??

I have been offered £400, but that's what I asked for so I don't know if its possible that its worth more??

Its just not worth the repair, £600 for a second hand gear box if I could find one plus the cost of Mercedes fitting it, then the cost of Mercedes fitting the clutch actuator and then the issues with the suspension and the rear sub frame, not to mention the stuck spark splug.

Gearbox £600
Mercedes Fit £200
Mercedes Clutch Actuator and train £400
Rear Subframe £220
New Suspension £300
Stuck Spark plug £400 for a helicoil.

£1720 or so for a car that is worth £2500, not worth it.

As said on ffo,

Perhaps it would be worth looking into a private 'for spares' sale - to someone who can do said work themselves.
Many people buy CAT-C writeoffs and rebuild them.

I'd say look for your current market value and then half it. Might be worth giving it a run on ebay?
Talk to some local garages. (fixing garages not selling garages) There might be people that want one to play with...

Anyhow, I'm sure you can do better than £400.

If you have the time, driveway/garage space, an ebay account and a set of spanners... split it for parts and THEN sell it for scrap? I'm sure you could get enough to buy another forfour if you split it up :P

My medical issues really don't allow me to do any stripping nor do I have the facilities, I guess I could give it a run on ebay, but its stuck at Mercedes.

These guys (£400 offer) just pick it up and tow it away and deal with all the paperwork.

I doubt I could get £1250 for it considering the work that is required, would be nice, following on from something JJ said I am now looking into motability more seriously as an option but it depends on how the DWP assess my condition.

They have a Seat Ibiza 5 door sportrider that might just do a job, which is available on motability, unfortunately they don't have the new A class or obviously the new forfour...... yet! If it happens that is.

I would love another forfour tbh, everything else seems dull in comparison and despite its bumpy ride, I have enjoyed driving it immensely, its just so willing unlike some VAG offerings that are lumpy and turgid.

Thanks for your advice as always

It's a real shame - ring around some local scrappies and see what they will offer you?

Why not see what your indie garage will offer for it?

Spares or repairs on eBay is a good idea for very little outlay - just be v honest!!

Had just spent five uncomfortable hours wrestling with that stereo, spent money on the MOT, the doors and a new battery, it owes me about £500 from th elast few months alone.

Am gonna be taking the stereo and speakers out of course....

I'm sure the airbags+airbag module + steering rack&rack ECU are worth more than that. Wheels+tires and all the plastic panels are again at least 400. Isn't anybody on here willing to take it off your hand for a decent price, take it apart, keep whatever he needs than sell the rest of the bits for a profit?

If I put the car on EBAY, what should I look out for?

I have never sold a car before so wouldn't know if I was being fleeced, I assume accept cash only?

It will cost £12.99 to list it, may just put it on with £400 start price, £700 by it now, and see what happens!

ask for a £50 min deposit within 48 hours of auction ending

don't put a buy it now because as soon as 1 person bids i think that option goes away (i forget)

is £12.99 for listing a car in the classifieds?

i would list it in the car parts section - must be cheaper

Nope - that is in the cars section......

Only £310, maybe £400 is a good offer after all?

Try contacting Fudge, forsmart or Digitech and see if they are looking for any parts. Fudge might buy it and rebuild it to sell it on or just scrap it. I would say try the indies first as they may want it for parts.

I am sorry you have to say good bye to the old girl but she's done you proud.
