What Smart do you have?  Certainly for the Brabus forfour you can ONLY get the keys cut from Smart (sent from Germany and coded to your car's original locks and ignition barrel), and ONLY Smart/Mercedes can code the key to unlock and start your car.

Some Smarts I believe it is possible to get the keys cut and coded by an independent garage... certainly my local Smart specialist has a display case containing blank keys.

Funkydoodycool is 100% correct....
You can only get keys cut to fit your car from MB in Germany.
And....when the keys arrive at you local MB/Smart dealer, they
are currently the only one's who can then TAN code it to your car.

Without the TAN code the key will not imobilise the alarm or start the car.
The car came with 2 keys when new....and the cost to replace any keys that
have been lost or damaged is a penalty for loosing them.
In the UK a new key costs £200 +£50 to code it.

It sounds a lot....but if it was an MB key or one for a Punto or Renault the cost
for a new electronic key would be around the £800+ mark ! !    ???

MB Watford charged me £100 for a new key.  I then put the working circuit from my snapped key in it... so now I have a working key.

They want "around £100" to code the other chip to my car... so I'll get it done some day.  With luck before the one working key stops working.

I intend to buy another key, and then get 2 coded together.  That way I will have two working keys, and one snapped one with a working chip as a spare...

Try someone like this http://www.express-keys.co.uk/autos.html

I don't see why the blade cant be cut its just a laser cut key problem is most place tell you No because they don't have the hardware and main dealer say's no because they don't know any better.

Ive had many keys for cars laser cut some from photo's that main dealers had quoted hundreds of pounds for the cost of a pint.
Complete with transponder pill.
Then just paid main dealer for coding.

I am only refering to the cutting of the blade.

If a decent locksmith wanted in though your lock he would be in.

Ill eat my hat if you cant get a key cut somewhere like the link i posted.

Let me know how you get on.
