1.3 passion not starting first time
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:57:54 AM »

well it was bound to happen..... no matter what car we got for dad, something was gonna happen to it.

after a huge downpour on it last night, its struggling to start.

turns over fine just wont fire first time!

its been running fine for 5 days but after the rain its struggling (fine once started)

also had a notice come up on the screen about airbag (my brab did that once before after i blew a fuse on the sidelights)

so its got to be electrical(ish)

or could it be a TVA issue (the damp air making the TVA all nice and sticky)

i'm going to be there tomorrow and saturday

is it the original battery? or has it been changed?
on the petrol x-type they had problems with non starts, but it turned over ok but didn't fire, turns out it was the battery, it had a 'small' battery and once we fit the diesel battery it fired up every time.

no harm cleaning the throttle body out. might be worth checking the plugs and replacing if necessary

yeah - i think it is the original battery.

may take my voltmeter too.....

dad is going to get it looked over by his mechanic anyway

new airfilter will be fitted saturday as well (thanks FDC)

its annoying as dad was just showing his mate, drove it there and then it wouldn't start - oops!!

sorry to hear of problems already JJ....but in a way I always expect something to
crop up when I get a car....so far only the Brab 4.4 has been without probs.

Defo worth changing the battery...for peace of mind anyway...
And defo worth giving the TVA a good clean too...

voltage on x-type with the small battery was 12v but it still didnt fire, its amps that start the car (aswell as volts), less amps and it wont start. might be worth swapping it off yours and see if it fires. could be a duff earth aswell, could swap them off yours again and try.
starter could be failing could be summert else

cheers...

earth leads was the other thing i was going to check

i have asked dad to see if there is any damp around the bulkhead by the fuse box as there is a bag of fuses in there. could be dampness causing it.

can't think its anythig to do with fuel etc but it could be a fuse (linked to the airbag fault)

may take my OBD2 stuff as well (won't be in my car)

Sounds similar symptoms to my Pug 306DT.  I didn't fit the remote wire to my sub, and so it drained the battery every night.  Engine would turn and turn and turn and then... VROOOOOM *tons of black smoke*

Charging the battery would solve it every time, so I'd be inclined to start there.  If not a higher amperage, at least a new one.

It did in the Pug.  Doesn't take so much to turn the starter, but the cylinders wouldn't ignite.  Was a DT so not exactly the same...

well it will turn over for quite some time (like 10mins) before it starts!

gonna change the fueol pump fuse and then try again and if not, it'll be a job for the AA man.

Quit trying to start it like this. You will fry something. Check the fuel pump relay, spark plugs, all fuses, clean the tva...

And relay! Very important, and more likely than the fuse. If it were the fuse it would have never ever started.
