Wheels Wanted...
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:18:48 PM »

Hi

Anyone have a set of 14/15" alloys in good condition with reasonable tyres they want to sell??

Need to replace all my tyres soon, but as my 15" movelines are not in great condition thought I might just get some new wheels. Am I right in thinking the 17" Brabus alloys are too big for a 1.3 Passion?

I know I could refurb mine but cannot leave my car on axle stands for a week.  Might do that when I have my new ones then sell them on.

Cheers

The brabus wheels fit your forfour, but don't get them. The ride becomes very harsh, economy and power both go down, and they are expensive to keep straight. Plus the tires are much more expensive. Stick to 15" wheels, the ones you have are very nice, easy to refurb and keep clean, plus the tires in that size are very cheap and you can easily afford a v good quality tire that will keep you safe.

Thanks. That grille seems very cheap!

I like my wheels, problem is getting them refurbed. I have found a good price to get them sandblasted and re-coated, but it is a bit of trek to get to, and they want to hold onto the wheels for a few days. Are there 'DIY' options for cleaning up wheels that are bubbling/corroding?

you better invest in a spare set of metal ones and you send the alloy ones to refurb and you will have 2 spare sets, 1 for spring very nice and 1 for winter wehn usualy the salt and chemicals for melting the snow/ice will affect the alloy tyres.

It depends on your damage, but there are things like this available http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E-Tech-ETECH-Alloy-Wheel-Refurb-Kit-Paint-Lacquer-Putty-/330473323806?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item4cf1bebd1e
For minor damage I've just touched up in the past with heat resisting aluminium paint and it's been fine. I think keeping the Movelines is your best bet and there's a fantastic choice of tyres at excellent prices for that size of tyre. A balance would be maybe touch up some of the wheels and maybe get the worst one or possibly two refurbished. You have to bear in mind too they'e soooo likely to be dinged again so why hit your pocket too much.

The other option, which is the road I took, is to buy a brand new set of after market wheels. You can get a good set for abou £300 plus tyres, which is cheaper than replacing your smart ones with new, and you can choose a style you like and make your car a little unique.

You can then sell yours on to someone who wants to refurb them and make some ££ back.

Cheapest though is as stated, to get them returned yourself and coated in your choice of colour.

Incidentally if you look at the bottom of the forum list you'll see a marketplace section, where people will list their wheels and other parts they're selling.

....That grille seems very cheap!

The grill is cheap because it is a 'replica'.
A genuine Brabus grill is about £140....and it is 3 main parts.....
The outer surround, the criss cross grill insert, and the grill insert mountings.

The FK grill is a one piece moulding....and about £40

As to wheels....
If you want to stick with Smart wheels, then be aware that there is a 'surplus'
of 16" Moveline wheels that Smart/MB are trying to move/sell....and they're available
for around £60 or so each.  Ask at your local Smart/MB dealer.

The tyres that you would have to find to fit these are 205/45/16.

Thanks for all the help, lots of options.

One final question - is it possible to buy the wheel centre caps? Having looked closely at my wheels, main issue is corrosion of the caps and around the caps.

Your local mb dealer should be able to get them for you, but don't expect them to be the cheapest pieces of plastic you ever bought!
