dirty bottom
« on: January 25, 2013, 08:21:15 PM »

OK so you can stop sniggering and laughing this is a dirty topic but it ain't THAT dirty >:( ;D

as you all know the back of out forfours gets dirty fairly fast compared to the rest of the car. there must be something you can do to keep it some what clean... and don't say wash it more often cos i think most of us do clean its a*s... boom boom :D

i recall seeing something on evils site regarding the aerodynamics of the fortwo and roady convertible. it has a small 'lip(s)' at the top of the front windscreen which is located in the middle (or one on each side in the roadsters case) which helps with the air trying to enter the cabin when the roof is open... link to page http://www.evilution.co.uk/830 , which got me thinking whilst on the way to work in my mums car this morning, could the cab tabs or something similar help with our dirty rear problem... or will it just make it worse?! :-\

its a flat back - therefore there is an area of low pressure which draws the spray back into this space.

nothing can be done apart from reducing the spray.

mud flaps - maybe a whole truck sprayway system - haha!!

Mr Singh you should trial those tabs on the back square of the car... maybe 1 on each side - although you might inadvertently open up a vortex to a parallel universe ;)

The Brabus upper/roof spoiler and the lower valance spoiler (to give it it's correct title)
doesn't help none with keeping the backs of the car clean......
If anything they make it worse.
But then the car was designed to be aerodynamic, which means it was designed to create
that vortex at the back to 'pull' the back of the car down to the road...more so with the Brab.
It's just a pain that the result of all that is that it gives the car a dirty rear.

I'm not sure if Fox made any comment on the other thread as to whether or not the
'diffuser' that he fitted on his has made any difference or not ? ?
I had thought at one time of drilling a whole line of 1" - 1.5" diameter holes across the very
bottom of the bumper panel to see if that made any difference, but then decided I'd rather
get my hands on a spare rear bumper centre section and try it...so that if it didn't work or
upset the existing handling/grip, then I would at least have my original one to put back on.
But so far I've not seen a s/hand star blue rear bumper centre section going for a reasonable
price to buy.

I've not been washing mine lately (TOO COLD!) so I've resorted to simply wiping the rear number plate with the sleeve of my uniform shirt every time the number gets unclear.

you can see on this how the flat back of the car and the caravan pulls all the airflow in behind it.

Something I noticed the other day when I was motoring up to Katoomba it was poring down cats & dogs & foggy so I had the rear wiper on, at first it left a smeared bit in the middle, as my speed increased the smear started to disappear  ??? It would seem the sucky vortex that glue the dirt & rain to the back also made the wiper blade stick to the glass and work effectively  :)

The snow is starting to melt and my car is absolutely filthy after just two days of milder weather. Tomorrow she's going in for a good wash. She has mud everywhere, and I only drive onroad.

I took advantage of the positive temps and switched the winter wheels(volvo v40 alloys and tires)  to the spring/autumn oz ultralegerras with M+S allseasons. I didn't want to risk a skid with my grandlines :)

I just got Linda a 42 and her back side seems better than mine, her 42 has vents at the back that seem to help, why haven't we got them !

I took her 42 to Liverpool today, which is about 100 mile round trip. when I got back it was cleaner than if I would have took my 44, and her back window didn't get that dirty as mine & her rear wiper worked better than mine  ???
