alternator belt 1500 petrol
« on: August 01, 2013, 04:49:31 PM »

Hi All
I have a 1500 petrol and need to change the alternator belt.
Is it a DIY job?
Any instruction?

Should be a fairly easy job. Did it on my 1.1 no trouble. Note the route of the old belt... digital image helps. Slacken alternator adjuster and mounting bolts, move alternator to remove old belt, insert new belt and tighten just enough to prevent squeal on startup but NO more. Job done. Might need retensioning after a while but don't over do it!

Most peops find that they can do all of the above steps in the MB explanation
BUT do without removing the lower engine compartment panelling or loosening
the lower/bottom nut on the alternator.
A bit of effort is required though....to move the alternator if you don't though.
But it is possible....I've done it and seen it done like that. Your choice really.

Indeed and we will not have access to the tension gauge so common sense has to be used re: the tightness of the belt. To reiterate, IMHO just tight enough not to squeal on startup.

think we need to be a bit careful putting up the workshop manual pics - they are copywrite merc/smart and we don't wanna get busted.

they are v helpful but maybe keep them to pm or say you can help if someone needs them :)

what does the BRAB replacement look like?
