Weight saving / Rear seat removal
« on: August 09, 2013, 12:26:31 PM »

Anyone know how much the rear seats weigh in a Brab? How much weight can be saved by removing the rear seats and spare wheel?

I very rarely have more than 1 passenger in it so thinking they might as well come out, it it's worthwhile and easy to do?

That's the guide.

Weight wise, no idea because I haven't bought mine yet :)

Ha ha ha...nice one there karlbarclay.....

Seriously though, the rear seats do weigh a lot.
Yes you can just about 'oik' them out when they are undone,
but do it carefully as you do not want to damage your back !
And the spare wheel is a space saver in the Brab, but even that
is quite a weight. Just ensure that you put a can of tyre repair
inflator in the space the wheel once was...or you'll be stuck one day.

One thing you will notice though, is a distinct increase to the noise
level with the rear seats removed. Without doubt I would think that
you would need to add some spare carpet of some sort to cover the
floor of both the seat area and the boot to dampen the noise down.

Care to hazard a guess at an approx weight if you've lifted them before?

Anyone ever had a forfour on a weigh bridge? wonder how accurate the quoted weight figure of the car is.

Seriously, it's killing me not having one yet.

The mondeo derv's on it's last legs and really want and need a brab!

This is something I will be doing also as I have a long commute so all the extra weight seems a bit wasteful.

If it's a 2 man job for the seats, hazarding a guess at around 70 - 80 kg would be reasonable?

I feel your pain, that derv must be a hateful thing to drive!
Shame a good brab for sale is hard to come by.

I would have thought about half that weight personally! If it is that heavy that's insane!

Sorry gregk2.

Keep on forgetting I'm a big laddie!

40kg's only around 6 stone. Surely that's managable for an average sized bloke? My son's coming up to 4 stone and he's easy to throw around with one arm.

I thought the shape and awkwardness of smuggling it out of the door is what would make it a 2 man job

I guess so.

Hard to visualise as the pics in the guide won't show on the works pc (damn HMRC image police)

If you do get it done, please post your experience so we can learn (or more to the point so I can read it, be lazy and copy what you did!)

I'd estimate about 50kg.  They're manageable on your own, but a bit fiddly.

The noise is HORRENDOUS.  If you do remove the seats, you'll want to invest in some decent sound-proofing.  I haven't had the rear seats out of my Brabus, but I did in my old Micra and whenever the road was wet the noise was incredible, like being in a plane.

Also the back of the car will look horrible with all the bare metal etc that is currently covered by the seats - so you'll want some carpet or something to clean it up.

you do realise that your car WILL fail the MOT as it will say it has 4/5 seats but the tester will only see 2. thats what iv been told when i was at collage as one of the other lads was having similar ideas for his festa.

The weight of a normal cloth rear seat is much or less the same as the leather one.  I know this because I have taken them both out of my car.  They weigh about 40 kg but it is much more easier to lift them out of the car from the bootlit.  It is better to have an extra pair of hands just to get it in and out of the car a bit easier.

Other things to consider if you remove the rear seats, as the car was built/designed
to have them in :-
1/ the brake bias will no longer be correct due to the weight loss....
2/ the ride/handling will also change...(not necessarily for the better)
3/ as funkydoodycool has said...the noise level will really be unbelievable unless
suitable soundproofing/carpet/whatever is fitted....(which will add a little weight)
4/ you may have to advise your insurance as your car is no longer 'as manufactured' !
Seriously, I kid you not. It could well affect your coverage if you have an accident.

Sounds to be more trouble than it's worth! Why not buy a fortwo?  ;)

I have them taken out (road trip with my car, we slept in it some of the nights). I will weigh them when i get home, but it's certainly no more than 40kgs, I took them out by myself, and got them in my flat, taking the stairs. Spare wheel+jack another 10kgs max, so even if you take all the unnecessary bits out, you are still at a max saving of 50kgs, which unless you go to a track to race is irrelevant.

There is increased noise, but the car is completely covered in carpet, so the only metal bits showing will be the hinges. It's not very bad unless you are on wet roads, and even then it differs between different tires. On dry roads it's not unbearable, I've been driving like this for two weeks on Firestones. I had it out before (to cut the hinges to allow for greater adjustment range) and i had some winter Pirrellis then and it was bad, lots of noise from the tires then.

Also, anything in the boot will come flying forward when you brake, a very dangerous thing, even if you only have small light things, they can still find their way under the pedals etc.

I did not feel a change in car behavior, the weight difference is much too small, and I've taken the car on a set of very demanding roads these past couple of weeks. It's nice to have a decent sized boot for a change, without the backseat it's almost as big as my friend's V40 :))
