I was afraid  that water could have made it's way through wiring looms, from the door to the sam, or condensation from the A/C came out the wrong way because the bleeder hose is clogged.

But as I've said from the first post, it's much more likely that it's a weak battery. Get a mate with a good battery to lend you his, and see if the problems persist. You may still need to get to a STAR machine to clear any logged faults, but with a good battery there should be no pending ones, just old codes that are stored for later reference.

Forfours are much more leak proof than 42 and roadsters, but it can still happen thanks to our glued on roofs and age, pressure washing etc.

I've had water dripping from the front interior courtesy light. So they are not submarines, but although not sloppy made, the fitting of most parts is far from perfect.

Hi everyone,
thank you for all of the answers, much appreciated.

I eventually gave in and booked my car in to Smart of Northampton who popped the STAR diagnostic thingy on and yes it was the SAM unit. They replaced, recoded it and recoded the ECU (for the keys) and all is running wonderfully now. Cost £379.00, which was less than I was expecting.

The reason for it faulting is still a little unclear, but likely that because the water drain at the bottom of the windscreen, under the lip of the bonnet, got clogged with leaves (in the storm we had a while back), water seeped internally and made its way to the SAM unit.

Hey ho, all seems well now and my car even got a valet.
Thanks again for the help.

4) find a reputed local indie Smart garage (we can help find you one I'm sure), as it'll no doubt be cheaper than going to MB, and the guys will have the same training, same equipment, and more than likely better experience with the forfour.

Hello Funkydoodycool,

Having experienced a myriad of electrical faults similar to the ones in this thread, and having checked all the options suggested to no avail, I find myself in need of an independent Smart garage. I live near Ruthin (Denbighshire), and hope that you might be able to help me find one who isn't going to rip me off.

Many thanks,

Julie

Clarification re SAM unit on/in a ForFour.

MB did not name it as a SAM, but instead it is called the Central Gateway
and it is located (in RHD cars) close to the accelerator pedal unit UP under
the dashboard.  The heated seat relay plugs into a fitting in it surprisingly.
