Was cruise control a factory option?
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:20:08 PM »

Whilst doing my research to purchase a forfour, I came across a couple of cars in Germany that have cruise control. Was CC a factory option or are these likely to be 3rd party CCs? I'm surpised that it isn't more common TBH.

A good question there, and one that was on my mind after I got my ForFour.

Much questioning and investigation revealed that it cannot be retrofitted, so the answer is, is that
it was a factory fit option only. Shame cos I would have had it if it had been possible to retrofit.

You can get kits to retrofit cruise control. The only trouble comes is talking to the CANbus electrics.

Interesting that it can't be retro fitted if it was a factory option. Can't it be done because (1) the wiring is not available, (2) the cruise stalk is not available or is it a TAN coding thing? The first two could possibly be sourced from a crashed car although I assume it will be pretty hard to find one. The only two cars I've come across on the net with cruise on are petrol versions.

I do see your point......
I would therefore recommend that you ask Kate at Wellsmart very nicely from her professional
knowledge of the Smarts and the ForFour if it is possible, as there's not a lot that she doesn't know
about ForFours and what can and can't be done in the way of adding factory option bits afterwards.
Let us know what you find out.....please.

http://www.conrad-anderson.co.uk/cruisecontrols/cruisecontrols-home.htm

Aftermarket kits, the forfour is "drive-by-wire" so should be relatively straight forward to tap into the relevent electrics.
Plenty of kits out there either DIY, or get it fitted.

There's always http://www.misterdotcom.info/smart/for4/for4.html and I understand that has been fitted
by at least one forfour owner in the UK.

Yes, I've seen the MisterDotCom cruise module. I'll investigate the possibility of retrofitting and speak to Kate as suggested.

Thanks for that info/update basilbrush....
I too have seen the Misterdotcom crusie control kit.....but they don't do instructions in English
(I know as I emailled and asked)...the page has 2 prices for it as well...the cheaper one is for
those with auto/semi-auto gearbox, and the higher price is for the manual gearbox version.

What I found confusing were the pictures of the wiring...looks like they go into the OBD2 port...
which would not work for me as I use that for the scanGaugeII I have/use...and I can't splice
that or the MDC cruise control in to the wiring AND have the ScanGauge at the same time.
It can't be used for more than one thing at a time. (I have been reliably informed by Evil)

So..if there is anyone 'out there' who has fitted this piece of kit....can they give us a 'heads up'
on how easy it was to install...where the wiring does go...and or course, how well does it work ?

Looking at it (and I know it says cruise) but I wonder if it's a speed limiter type function - beeps etc at 70mph

Does the mph figure change as you drive??

Some functions of the computer are only available while stationary ;)
