Front brake pads for a non Brabus
« on: March 06, 2014, 06:16:33 AM »

Hello, I have looked but wasn't able to find what I was looking for. Please forgive me if this has been covered.
I have been searching for after market front break pad part numbers. In my search I have managed to find some through SuperCheap Autos here in NZ for $80 NZ. I am not sure if these are OEM or aftermarket yet as they have to order them in. Is this a good price for this particular part?

Brake pads start from around £15 dependant on brand and quality, a quick ebay search should reveal a few options

On your behalf I've had a trawl thru eBay.NZ for front brake pads,
and only found one  !   I even tried for Mitsi Colt, but they don't
list that model...an Eclipse, yeah...but it doesn't have the right shape
or the spring fitting at the 'top' that applies pressure to the caliper.

Anyways..even the one I found for the ForFour is from Oz... but listed
on the NZ ebay :-
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Disc-Brake-Pads-Set-Smart-ForFour-W454-2004-2005-2006-FWD-4cyl-1-3L-1-5L-/131091302976?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e85a68a40&vxp=mtr

Price AU $44.00    with p&p of AU $29.25 (express Intl flat rate charge)

Also look for volvo S-V40 pads <2004, for 256mm discs!

Like these, but closer to you so shipping doesn't double their price.

The link is just to show a quality brake set, not to buy it from that place. He can use the product number (visible in the picture) and source them locally.

Found these on ebay.co.uk for you...with part number and sizes info etc.
Really cheap I must say....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMART-FORFOUR-Brake-Disc-front-x2-TRW-DF4457-/310825841718?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ASmart|Model%3AForfour&hash=item485ea9f436

But...the only postage is from Lyon (France) to UK.   As all the rest I found
were a lot more money...starting at about £92.  So I thought...hmmmm...
what if seller could get them sent from Lyon to NZ ?  How much for ?
And how much cheaper possibly than you could possibly get them for ?
Up to you to have a search n see what you can find or get locally...and
for how much, then compare. Ok ?

Thanks CrazyG I will do more homework around those too. Brought those brake pads for $45 NZ nearly half the price of the OEM pads, Thanks guys.
Went to the mechanic today and asked if the current rotors will pass a WOF and he said yes but they will wear my new pads out faster than normal due to some wear groves in the rotors.
What do you guys reckon?

Well, I think that your mechanic is partly right. The wear grooves in the discs will create similar patterns in the new pads. Not ideal. However, if the discs are just scored but not TOO badly worn then as a cost effective solution it is possible to get them skimmed.

Even a new set of discs and pads will show scoring after a few weeks and a lip on the disc edge will start to develop. All perfectly normal and you should in most circumstances be able to get away with at least two sets of pads to one set of discs. Fastfit outlets will do their best to exploit that lip on the edge of the discs to convince you that you need a new set of discs when you don't. They have wear limits and need to be measured and a lot have wear indicators. Some pads even have a treated surface layer to bed pads in quicker to the old disc.

Front pads last anywere from 30  to 70 kms, depending on your driving style.

Front disks need to be changed when they reach the minimum thickness of 21.5mm (out of 24). if yours are close to 21.5mm, then it makes sense changing them now, so you don't wear them out excessively and risk warping, brake judder, or even cracking way before these new pads wear out.

If you do need new discs, you can use these oe numbers to find compatible discks

You are looking for 256mm in diameter, 4x114.3 stud pattern and 69mm center bore. Carisma and S/V40 <2004 with modest engines have these same 256 discs, while higher powered versions have 282mm discs up front, just like the brabus. They also have 260mm rear brakes on these powerful models, compared to our 250mm ones found on normal and brabus forfours.
