I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but I think the figure is in km and it only changes every 1000km

Its 14k miles, yearly or driving style. But the 14k could be in km tho, the trip strangely resets at 1k km but the mileage equivilent.

Be warey of parkers they are wrong on so many things with the forfour, took year for them acknowledge the pulse. Had send them the brochure so they would believe me haha

The ECU monitors your mileage and how you use your car and tells you a month before your service is due. Two spanners are shown for a B service and one spanner for an A service with a countdown in days. My car is showing 13300 because mine was serviced a  couple of months ago whether it's miles or kilometres I don't know.
In Mr Singh's case I would dig those invoices out and see who serviced the car last and the mileage. Smart garages use the star diagnostics to zero the indicator when the service is carried out. It is possible for someone to zero the display by pressing buttons and turning the ignition off and on in a certain sequence.
This could be done either legitimately by a non smart garage or by someone less scrupulous who might be trying to give the impression that a service has been carried out when it hasn't.

If the service indicator hadn't been reset, you would get the following on the dash when you start up...

.......which states the number of days overdue (2 in this case)

How can you be sure that the "service due in" figure is in miles??

Looking at the manual (downloaded from this site) the service indicator counts down km. Therefore 14000km equals 8699 miles, or 9000 miles between servicing.

You'll also notice your trip reset at around 621 miles because its based on km.

It does say miles  ::) Now that's really strange I wonder if that was changed at my last service by the Smart diagnostics. Funny we were all unsure miles or kilometres and it's there plain to see.

The service interval counts whatever you have the odometer set up to read. I have the odometer set in kms, and mine shows 20.000km when i reset it. It drops in 100kms increments. After around 2000kms, mine shows 17400 cause i drive it kinda hard (either stop start city traffic, or max speed highway trips all the way down to the sea side).

If more than a year has passed since your last service reset (But you haven't done more than 20.000kms) it will display the number of days overdue. If you pass the mileage mark before the year passes, it will show you how many hundreds of kilometers you're over the limit.

Right then to confuse matters, my hard copy manual is different to the digital copy acquired from here (I will have to check my personal digital copy when I am next on my Mac).

The digital copy off here states "service interval display" in km p. 1-41, whereas my hard copy states "maintance interval display (WIA)" p. 1-43 but no given units only in the graphic shown above which shows "km" (makes life easy for smart, we're the only ones crazy enough to use miles). Hmm smart likes to keep us on our toes, have they changed the manual in the forfour's short life?

As my forfour WIA displays miles I tend to assume it's counting down in miles until my next service (or days/miles when I am overdue).

If your odometer reads in miles than the service interval will count miles for sure. To check, just set it in Kms instead, and see the service counter change as well.

Reset it. Turn the ignition on, double tap the button that switches between the mileages and keep it pressed on the second tap, switch off the ignition (key all the way back), quicly turn it back on. Continue keeping the button pressed for another 10s (until the car beeps and the service interval is reset).
