Tinkering with something special
« on: October 09, 2015, 11:26:49 PM »

Hi all.

Been a while since I posted on here but life is busy.
My boss is in possession of a VW T5 sportline that had a few issues.
It's not standard by any means as it's been mapped to the hilt and is very, very rapid! Also, it's previous owner was a certain Guy Martin!
I took it out last week and noticed I was jerky under acceleration. Thought it may have the wrong diesel in as its only meant to run on premium.
Found the last fuel receipt and ruled that one out.
Popped the bonnet and found that EVERY boost pipe was leaking. Black crud everywhere.
What a naff design by VW in my opinion. Aly pipes with rubber gaskets and C clips. All gaskets worn and clips too weak to hold the huge boost this thing produces.
Cutting a long story short, I've got it up and running well again. Taking the front end off tomorrow to get to the gaskets at the intercooler and to give that a flush out. Sooooooo much grease in the pipework!
Hopefully it will be wheel skidding in third like it's tuned to do!

So you're complaining original parts cannot handle after-market mapping?

Think it's more a case of telling us what he's into at the moment,
and what he found.
Ok, so there may well be a leaning towards saying that the original
VW stuff is a bit below what he expected, BUT....
as it's an old T5 then I would be expecting the gaskets to be worn..
and yes, the clips alsomight have gone weak.....but when all is said
and done, those parts were not built to handle/hold the huge boost
that he now says it has been made to produce.

Who knows, if it were unmodified/standard, then possibly the issues
he found quite possibly wouldn't be there now.

Its pretty typical of high mileage work vans (remapped or not) and VWs use a very thin oil 0w30 so the intake pipes are probably plastered with oil. Don't be surprised if you find a bit of oil in the intercooler either

Yes they're original hoses and yes, I have enough brainpower to grasp that increased boost will stress them more. Why would I even say "omg powers up 100% and stock items are breaking. VW are crap......" really.....
My gripe is the way the  pipework is coupled. Check the T5 forums out. It's a common fault on the lower powered 1.9 with the same pipe routing.
I've had to modify one coupling with self tapping roofing bolts and rubber gaskets because it popped of on the first test run.

Pipes were indeed crudded up. Intercooler wasn't that bad. The oil was working it's way out the blown gaskets before reaching it.

I'll get some in daylight tomorrow.
Still haven't forgot about the turbo btw. Just having a mental week or two atm.

Going to try and clean some gunge from the engine bay tomorrow. It's filthy with all the crap blowing out the hoses!

Did get the missus and kids in there on a run earlier and they were a tad shocked when I floored it. Lovely motor!

I take it that it is the 2460cc (2.5) and not the 1968cc (2.0) lump in it ?

No access to a pc atm but I do have pics.
What I'm told is it's running 230bhp and 480ft lbs torque.... no wonder the hoses are struggling!

I had that hoses blowing off in my honda,  once a bit of oily vapour finds a way through past the clamp then it only gets worse and you can say bye bye to holding peak boost.  Get all those hoses off and degrease and refit
