unusual noise
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:48:07 PM »

Well after spending a fortune on "Fritz" and thinking a warbling noise that I & some friends who are car nutters had diagnosed as worn tyre noise would  go away after put the KU39's on well it did not >:( so its back to BM tomorrow  :-[ luckily I have a meeting just up the road so its not a special trip. I think it may be a bearing, front left ( but what would i know ) stay tuned for the next instalment  :-\ its only money   :'(

Can't take it with us when we depart from this god forsaken world we live in !
So might as well get some pleasure/excitement/enjoyment out of it while we can.

I've always had a rear bearing rumbling on mine since the day i bought it at 74.000km, it only gave way around 10 yrs at over 200.000kms, because rear wheels and brake cables were frozen solid, dragged them for a few kms, used a gas torch to heat them... after they unfroze the rumbling one was way noisier and could be felt rough as well, so next day new FAG hub..

When it was just noisy it would sound like and old bus or truck with MT tires on, but only at specific speeds, like between 70-90, or between 100-130... after that it was silent again... no extra noise in the corners and i couldn't tell which wheel it was until it got bad after the wheels jammed.

How does yours manifest itself?

Could still be tyre noise. Some makes do drone at certain speeds I understand.

It depends on how they have worn. Depending on tracking the tyres can become stepped or castled on the edges of the tyre which can cause a droning bearing type noise. It can also be the thread pattern that can cause the same type of noise.

Run your hand on the inner and outer edges of the tyre and you may feel a step. Depending on hiw badly they are stepped can cause it to be louder

I /had/have a 'wa wa wa wa' noise from my Brab that is speed related.
The rear bearing/bearings were suspected as being the culprit/s as
they're the usual one's that seem to go before the fronts....plus the
sound got worse when a rear cross brace was fitted...transmitting
or tranferring the noise to the other wheel arch obviously.

All 4 wheels had been changed and fitted with new tyres after the
brace was fitted, and no change in the noise, so both rear bearings
have been changed, but guess what...the noise is still there  :'(

The things is...both fronts have been checked and given a really
good 'going over' for any play of the wheel bearings AND all the
suspension joints and bushes, yet there is no play at all...anywhere !

It is so pee'ing me off that I'm going to have both front hubs or bearings
done as soon as with the hope it resolves it, but if not, I'm stumped
for what's causing it.

Well the verdict is in and its the front left bearing :( MB quoted $1784 ( hub and carrier) yes that is not a typo  :o smart-stuff $200.00 (hub) it did not take long to make the decision. ;) When I was talking to the tech at MB he said that the bearings are very wide and will not show any movement but can still be bad.

When the hub arrives i'd put it in the trunk and change it if/when the rumbling gets worse...

G'day there,
That's a lot $1784 unbelievable, plus what you spend on tires and the other things to keep your forfour on the road. good luck.
I hope I never get those costs, as here it will cost even more I think.
Greetings,
Eddie.

G'day there,
You don't seem to have much luck lately with your 44 called fritz, sorry to read about that, and hope for you that its the last of your costs on it.
Greetings,
Eddie.
