Help needed to build intercooler for Brabus.
« on: January 05, 2016, 10:02:57 PM »

Hi everyone , I am looking to build myself a new intercooler set up for my Brabus I have been quoted £400 alone on parts and they can not give me a price to fit it as they have never fitted one before. The company's I have spoke to have worked on many Mitsubishi Colts CZT
So know there way round the Mitsubishi engine. I noticed a couple of people have used Mishimoto intercoolers , I need help on the bore sizes of the pipework lengths angles sizes  and the best clamps to use also good value for money hoses and angles that are up to the job. Any help would be very appreciated .
Cheers
John. ;D

Fitting an FMIC to a CZT is relatively speaking 'a piece of cake'.
Fitting one to a ForFour is totally different as there is not the
space available behind the front end as it curves in in all the
places that it doesn't on a CZT, and is; dare I say it; the devil's
own job to mount it above the crash bar, lket alone under the
crash bar....which is where the CZT one is mounted.

Yes it is possible, but I doubt anyone who has fitted one above the
crash bar has bothered to take any measurements or angles.
It has always been a case of cut here, try that, try again etc etc.
Invariably it ends up with the fog light on the nearside being rendered
useless as some of it has to be cut away to get the pipework in !

However I can announce that S2Smarts have with a lot of time and
effort managed to fit an FMIC below the crash bar on a road going
Brab with very little cutting of the front end...AND they have
managed to retain the n/s foglight/indicator.
Rob admits that it was a nightmare of a job; being the first one
they had ever done; but now they know how to do it they are
offering the same service to customers on a 'supply n fit' cost of
£600 inc VAT.

Sounds a lot,eh ?  BUT...if you consider that for an 'above the crash bar'
job in DIY form you are talking £130+ for the Mishimoto I/C,
then roughly £250-300 for the pipes, joiners, silcone hoses and
plain jubilee type clips. (The pipes won't be swagged, so the hoses
can slide off if sufficient pressure is applied !).
Just that little lots come to a figure circa £380+....and that is without
your time and effort/labour fitting it.
What price experience then ?

Oh, and S2 use top notch 'SFS' components, with swagged joiners,
4 ply hoses, and 'double strength' aircraft quality hose clamps...
which are more reliable but a bit more expensive than usual.

Hi G, thank you for replying to me , when you put it like that it's properly not worth me giving it a try all my time and effort and at the end I might still not get it spot.  Also taking time off work to fit it, it would make more sense for me going in work earning the cash and let them fit and pay them  its the same difference money wise.  It would be nice to see a pic of the FMIC that they have fitted any chance of getting one and posting it on here for myself and others to see who may intrestead in having one fitted.
Many thanks John. ;D

Pictures as promised.

(Sorry...there are no internal/engine bay pictures of the work/workmanship
undertaken by S2 as it could all be used/copied by 'others' without going thru
all the lengthy time and effort taken by S2 to acheive what is shown here.)

Cheers G,
I have been in contact with them regarding the FMIC looks great I think it would look better all black with a  grill or mesh in front of it to try and give it a bit of stealth look but making sure the grill is not to wide restricting the air flow. I was given a couple of options removing aircon or working round it I don't really want to lose the aircon due to are red hot summers we get. 8) the clutch release bearing is making a noise now but goes when the peddle is pressed in  :'( so I think I will have to get this done first , thanks for adding the pics so I can see what they  can do .
