Random Handbrake alarm/light going off
« on: April 12, 2016, 03:42:55 PM »

Hello - today my pulse decided to really annoy me with the handbrake alarm beep sounding off along with the warning light illuminating very randomly. The hand brake is definitely off. I guess the sensor is dirty/faulty......but where is it??
Anyone got any ideas?

I think the switch for the handbake is below the cover... I'd start there.

If it does it when you are cornering hard, on an incline or setting off/braking, then also check the brake fluid level.

When it's near minimum and it sloshes around, it can uncover the sensor and trip a low level alarm. Hasn't happened in my forfour yet, but it did happen when the factory pads got near the wear limit on my other car.

As the pads wear, the piston is pushed out to take up the slack, and this lowers the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
Note:-When the piston is pushed/wound back in, the level rises again, so if you've ever topped it when the pads or discs were worn, it may spill out when you replace the pads.

Thanks for that - just had brakes serviced and worn parts replaced...but i will still check fluid level - no harm in that...

Sorted - found switch under cover (cheers)...bit of air duster application...lots of fluff and stuff in there....and no more false alarms! Huzzah.
