Rattle at high revs - Brabus
« on: September 03, 2016, 08:09:26 AM »

Hey,
Yesterday I had to go collect my MIL as she is unwell.
I had a 320km round trip, When the Brabus was at high revs 5.5K + on the motorway, I could hear a small metal rattle. I'm going to take the car to the garage on Monday.
This was only under hard acceleration.

I was wondering if anyone on here has had this problem before?

I have the car MOT'd on 14/08/16 and all was ok. Nothing hanging loose.

Let's try to narrow your issue down a little, ok......

Is the 'rattle'/noise speed related..... or engine rev related ?

prob something tapping against something else

rattles i've had...

induction kit on the brake pipework (at the back of the engine bay)

HID ballast on the air con pipe work (rhs of the engine bay)

Heat shield over the manifold

Thank guys for reply,

Rattle is only at high revs under hard acceleration. It sounds like metal in the turbo or similar.
I'm going to check under the car tomorrow.
I'm going to give it a big blast tomorrow to see if it the noise is still there. Then garage on Monday.

Hoping nothing to serious.

Maybe the fins/blades in the turbo are damaged does it have any power loss ?

while the car is working, stop, open your windows and turn off the car.
See if you hear the rattle after the car is shut and turbo continues to blow (those 2-3 secs).
Perhaps it is turbo bearing or one blade bent / broken..

if it was turbo bearings / vanes you would hear it all the time and it would probably get worse when not under load

id say its something simple

does the noise come about if out of gear and revving to that rpm?

have a look at the engine stabilizer. i had a metallic rattle only on hard acceleration above 3,500 RPM and as it turned out the rubber bush in the big end had split causing excessive engine movement under hard acceleration.

I think Mr Singh has the answer.

I tried what BlackCDI said. It doesn't sound like the turbo now.

The noise isn't about unless at very very high revs. I think the engine stabiliser is going or gone. I'll get the garage to look at it tomorrow.
I will let you all know.

Cheers guys

I could rev mine in neutral and there was no noise, it was only in gear under load did the metallic rattle rear its head. I replaced it with the link 'G' organized a group buy for, and now the noise is gone.

Have a look at my 'Things wrong with my forfour' thread and there is a picture of the split bush
