drivers door mirror
« on: November 14, 2016, 09:15:37 PM »

whilst at tesco earlier this evening, some dog W@£%*& twat took my drivers door mirror off whilst HE was parking >:(. i always reverse in to a bay parking spot and the other driver drove in to the one next to mine.

i had gone in and realized i didnt have a bag, so went straight back to my car to see if i had one (turns out i didnt) and i saw the WHOLE incident unfold.

the driver of the 08 plate corsa drove in to the spot next to mine, but then had to reverse back as there wasnt enough room for him to get out. i could see that there wasnt enough gap between his car and mine and as he reversed his door mirror hit mine, folding them both in the opposite direction. mine was flat against the trid 'A' pillar and his had only been pushed back in the same direction to where it would stop on the mount. his window was open so i shouted 'i saw that and what are you going to do about it?'
he said without thinking 'take my details, im not giving you money'. i pushed my door mirror back and it fell off and was dangling on the wire, his door mirror, not a scratch.

i took his details and went back in, there is CCTV and asked the security guard if it was looking over the incident... it did over look my car but from the wrong side  :'(. by chance i looked at my keys and saw the tag that MSM had sent with what to do if an accident happens, i went back out and took some pictures, the lad in the corsa said theres no point in taking pictures as iv got he gave me his information. and he proceded to say its only going to cost a tenner to fix it. bare in mind my anger is already at 6, the minuet he said its only going to cost a tenner to fix it it nudged up to 7. i kept my calm and said its going to cost roughly £200 to sort it out from mercedes (i dont know how much a full electric door mirror is) and he said what car is it, i said a smart, and he gave that look as if to say your talking out your a*s, mercedes.

anger level at 7.5, and then he said is it electric, i said yes. itll cost you £30 then. anger level 7.75.

THEN he had the nerve to say itll clip back on, anger level 11 out of 10. i was fuming but still kept my calm and said if it clips back on, clip it back on, be my guest! he refused and his passenger started piping up saying just go through your insurance, i then said to the passenger 'your lad has just said my door mirror will clip back on, im only asking him to clip it back on, clearly me working for jaguar and i dont know how to fix a door mirror, you know more than me so sort it.'

rant over, and breath.

before i call mercedes tomorrow, anyone know how much a full electric drivers door mirror would be, new?

Oh man, sorry to hear that. :( That little tag MSM gives you sure does come in handy though. When my last Smart was ploughed into, the instructions on the tag gave me a rough idea of how to proceed.

Whilst I don't know the price of a complete electric mirror unit, I suspect £200 will probably be more than enough just for the single unit though the silver cover for the mirror may be extra though unless the one from your mirror unit is OK?

i recall someone getting one but couldnt find the thread.

the glass, indicator and cover are salvageable but its just broken from the hinge.

what i cant understand is there was more than enough room for him to park without twatting my door mirror.

£200 was a price that poped in to my head... good thing i dont own a Jaguar XF, a basic stripped door mirror assembly, as in no motor, no cover, no glass and no indicator is over £500, add blind spot monitoring and power fold and its another £150.

right, im off to work to see what other damage has occurred that i couldnt see at 7:30 last night

I'm guessing the mirror comes with the door mount?

Use the search function ;)

Ask Mercedes ;)

No use to you as it's passenger side but to give you a guide there's one on eBay for £90 + carriage.

AND the ebay one works out more... mercedes is £88.20 inc VAT. (i only asked so i could prepare myself for the dent in my pocket) just the body, no glass, no indicator lens, no cover, and im guessing no motor... although seeing it might be a different story.

i did search but couldnt find it for love nor money.

just when things are going well, something like this comes and bites you on the a*s!

the worst part is i didnt get his mobile number so i cant phone him and ask for him to fork out.

i could ask the DVLA for his address but i need a reason as to why i want the information, somehow i dont think the reason 'cos he damaged my car and i want money off him' is going to cut it.

address, i didnt ask for but he refused to give his phone number when i asked.

im not sure if this is weird but i found his facebook profile...

someone also told me that if i do a HPI check on his reg it will come up with his address... somehow im not convinced.

and is it worth informing the police a week after the incident?

I have replaced the door mirror on my wife's 1.1 passion, twice!  Last time I managed to get a second-hand one from e-bay. It is easy to fit. There is a very good guide on this site.  The hinge is the weak point. It will not allow the mirror to move backwards, so even a slight wallop and the complete mirror disintegrates.  Sorry don't know how much a new one will cost. But if you call a dealer and give hem your reg, they will be able to identify the part immediately and give you a price.
