Door handles...
« on: April 04, 2017, 09:17:35 PM »

Am I being a little stupid here (it wouldn't be the first time!)?  My forfour only has a key hole on the passenger side front door.  Having just one key hole isn't much of a surprise, but it being on the "wrong" side of the car is!  Is this a dodgy repair at some point, or did the bods at Smart have a sense of humour?

Its only "wrong" for RHD cars. The passenger side key lock would be on the driver side for LHD markets, such as the Netherlands where it was built. ;)

The general idea is that you only ever need to lock/unlock the
car with the keyfob...and the ONLY time you would
ever need to unlock it with the key itself would be IF you
have ignored the indicators flashing 9 times (on unlocking) that
signify the remote keyfob battery needs replacing URGENTLY,
or...the car's battery has gone flat/dead/died for some reason.

There's a lot about the ForFour (and presumably the Colt) that shows it's primarily a LHD car, eg. the bonnet release, fuse box/wiring hidden behind the glove box.

Nowhere near as bad as some French cars where the pedals are on linkages and the wipers are still the wrong way around!  I think some even had/have the steering on a chain.

G'day Gareth,

That bit about some French cars sounds very interesting, i like to know what car brands they are or were.
Thanx and Greetings,
Eddie.

Surely BMW were the worst offenders with the "Mini Clubman" and the single rear door that opened on the drivers side!  (even worse, the body panels were made in the UK!).

there was something about renaults (?) on watchdog where the linkages to the LHD controls were able to be affected by the passenger (e.g. them pressing the brakes)
