Got a very big surprice
« on: August 05, 2017, 10:31:40 PM »

G'day all,
I got the dreaded broken outer door cable and went to the Napier MB garage to try to order a new one and they said ''yes we do Smart'', and i thought gooood. The workshop manager said to me ''we have done a lot of work on that car'' and i said, you are joking, but he was right, he looked up on his computer and the result is a very big surprise, the things done and replaced are unbelievable, a new sender unit, a new water pump and belt, gearbox has been out 3 times, new gearbox oil, new clutch plate and new pressure plate and flywheel machined, also a new actuator, also been on the MB star a few times.
I honestly could not believe that was all done before 60000km, so the previous owners did not have much luck with it, but i have done about 30000km since i got it without much problems, hope it stays like that.
Greetings,
Eddie.

Very interesting  :D
On the Star a few times.....
So it should have been...at least once every year as part
of the servicing, so that should be around 12 times, without
any inbetween checkups on things if there has been a problem.

Water pump and belt...maybe the owner never checked the water
and ran it dry or it seized through lack of use maybe.
New actuator...sounds like it was a stop/start car...so it wore out.
That would also explain the clutch being replaced.
Flywheel machined rather than buying a new one...worn out/scored
due to a lot of stop start driving...or owner driving it in manual
and not changing gear (as in using too low a gear and clutch slipping).
maybe even carried heavy loads which would put more strain on it.

Least your 30thou kms has been relatively trouble free....so I'll
put my money on your driving/style of driving is behind that.

Hopefully your Smart will be problems free now! Give a car to mechanic to take good look on everything, especially fluids, brakes and wheels. Keep your Smart running next 250kkm ;)

I bought my 454 without service book. Is there a way to check history car with Mercedes if car was serviced with them?

If your car was serviced by MB then there will be a record on their
systems...and for a small fee they will provide a suitably stamped
service book....or so I am reliably informed.
Best bet then is to pop into the Service department of your local
MB dealership (with your V5C Logbook) and ask.

G'day all again,
Thanx for the reactions, much appreciated,  i read in the repair notes from MB that the first time the transmission came out was, they got advice from the Australian Smart technical advisor to do a clutch adaption (that was at 52000km), the second time cos the car went often in 0 and they thought that there was something wrong with the gearbox and the third time they thought the clutch was at fault and that was at 59000km, they had just put in a new actuator but the result was not what they were after, but the car struggled on after they had put in a new clutch, till i got it at 76000km.and have had no problems with it at all, has got now 106000km on the clock, thanx to the good guides here to what to do when you get the dreaded 0.
Thank you guys for all the good advise given to me to keep the Smart forfour technically up to scratch.
Greetings,
Eddie.
