Drivers door cable.
« on: November 01, 2017, 10:05:39 AM »

G'day all,
Today i did try to fix the broken drivers door outer cable without success, i read the instructions in the help guide many times but i could not do it, i do not have big hands at all but i can not get the cable in the bottom little slot, maybe i do it wrong, I did take the door handle off and the 3 screws out and could turn the lock around a bit but no luck,  what to do now ?
Any reaction here would be much appreciated.
Thanx a lot,
Eddie.

It is tricky. In order to prevent the bottom end of the cable popping out of its location it fits in at 90° to the lock. So, this means that in order to locate it you have to rotate it by 90° insert it and then release it. I found that twisting the end with some long nosed pliers worked. Did have to have several goes though. Make sure that you allow plenty of time... and be patient!  ;)

Take door's cover off. It's much easier that way.

G'day and thank you for the kind reply from Brabs, Deszus and CrazyG.
These days i am not as steady as i used to be, in the past i was known in some chat rooms as Unsteady Eddie, but that was on friday and saturday evening after a few drinks.
I will give it an other go in the next few days, and will keep you updated.
Thanx again guys,
Greetings,
Eddie.

I did find that once you take the door handle off, it's easy to pop the top clips of the door panel to get a whole hand + arm down in there without too much trouble, and without completely removing the panel.

You didn't mention either way, but once that was done for mine, it wasn't too much trouble. Although, it was a rear door, not the front door.

I also took some pics of that + the lock ass'bly and posted them earlier in case it helps.

Good luck!

G'day Telsblay, What ''top clips of the door panel'' did you take off to get your whole hand and arm in ?, that would make it a lot easier i think.
please let me know so i can finish mine.
Thanx a lot.
Eddie.

The 'clips' are really tags that are moulded into the top edge of
the door skin and they snick over the edge of the door 'skeleton'
and hold the door skin in place at the top.

With the door open....
1/ lower the window and lift off/remove the lower window rubber
    sealing strip...carefully.
2/ Afix masking tape or similar down the leading edge of the door skin,
ensuring that it also covers around and over the inner side of the skin.
3/ To release the tags, apply an upward pressure to the centre of the
door skin; preferably using your hip as there is a wider contact
with that than using your knee...plus it is less likely to crack the
door skin than a knobbly knee).
4/ With the upward pressure applied to the centre you should see the
top edge tags of the door skin lift a fraction...off of the locating edge
    on the alluminium door skeleton.
Now, with your hand/fingers (or other blunt instrument..like a wide
blade screwdriver, pry the tags off the lip edge.
5/ Once free of the top, the door skin can then be manouvred/jiggled
downwards and then forwards, free of the door frame.

Refitting is a reversal of this.

The instructions CrazyG has given were exactly the ones I followed. Here's some pics I took of part of the process:

G'day all,
I finally did it, and with the help from all of you, thank you very much, i ended up taking the door skin partly off, with the help of the instructions in the help forum it was not to hard.
I slid the top rubber off and put my bum against the door to pop the top tags, then i took the mirror off and slid the outer skin down and it came loose with the door wide open, i had taken the 3 screws out already so i could drop the mechanism down and put the cable in put the lock back in its place, the new cable trough
the hole and the skin back into place then the mirror back, i sprayed some silicone spray in the rubber, slid it into place and connected the lock to the cable and put the screw back with the handle in place, when i tried the result the lock came off the door again cos the screw went through the hole, no problem as i put a bigger washer on the screw and problem solved.
so finally i can enter the forfour  through the drivers door again without opening and reaching over through the passenger door first.
Thanx for the clear instructions.
Greetings,
Eddie.
