« on: March 16, 2018, 08:00:51 AM »

Going to get aux belt changed as there is no history with the car, started to squeal , what else do you get changed when doing this whilst it's off?

Nothing. You might give the water pump, alternator and air con pulleys a spin and listen for any bearing grumbles but that’s about it.  ;)

Oh yeah, give the tensioner pulley a bit of a spin too and have a listen.  ;)

I had my aux belt changed and it still squeals :(

I keep tensioning it

May take it off and give the pulleys a little degrease and roughing up when I get the chance

If you clean/degrease the tension pulley then you'll have to regrease
it again or it'll run dry, squeal even louder, and seize after a while.

I've been told that soaking AUX belt in petrol engines or alternator belt in diesel engines in Smart, into aircraft conditioner, can stop squeaking, but mainly will improve life of belt even up to 300k miles.

Tried on mine belt, as have replaced it not long ago, because old one snapped after ~10k miles... TIME will tell.

IMO by the time you’ve removed the belt you might as well change it for a new one and have done with it. As a matter of course I change mine every other service (2 years). Not worth cutting corners.  ;)

Since then, now I take closer look to the belt, every oil change, when lay under car.
Really worth to have spare on on the shelf and T50 torx ready.

For long journeys (+1000 miles) I am taking one with me now. Really were lost in nowhere last time it snapped. Nightmare when battery flats and you can still drive thanks to CI engine, but have no lights, steering is heavy like trying to move something heavy. Fun.

I didn’t mean degreasing the bearing - just the surface to stop the belt slipping
