Forfour cdi CV joint
« on: March 24, 2018, 09:17:28 PM »

I'm a bit of a novice with the site so I'd appreciate abit of support.

I have a Smart forfour diesel (95bhp)

The CV joints have worn due to the CV boots splitting and I hadn't noticed.

I have gone to Mercedes for replacement CV joints but need to buy the whole driveshaft. Both sides would cost me nearly £500 with the VAT!!!

I decided to see if I could find just the CV joint without needing to buy the whole driveshaft.

Although there are lots of places selling CV joints for Forfours none are compatible with the Smart as I have discovered after buy from two different sites and when fitting the joint realising they aren't the same size.

So I'm on here to ask if anyone knows of any where I can get the actual parts from instead of parts sold as the actual parts but not!!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Thank you for reading

It might be more expensive than DIY but perhaps try a driveshaft reconditioning firm such as D&D of Leeds( no affiliation, just a satisfied customer)

Not the first link...as that is for a 1.1 petrol......

You must specify/look for 1.5 DiD  (that's what Mitsubishi call the diesel
that Smart call CDi) and the Colt must be between the years of 2004-2008
(although I think up to 2012 is ok).

You cannot buy the CV joint 'on its own'...so a secondhand driveshaft
is the way to go....and the Colt one should be easier to source/find.

Thank you so much for your help.

I really appreciate your advice.

I've tried the driveshafts on eBay but they are coming off cars with 120k miles so I'm not sure how many more miles life they have let in them.

It's so frustrating that it's not possible to get new driveshafts without having to pay so much for them.

Anyway once again thanks for the help so far.

ok... what if a drive shaft that was removed from a car where the mileage was unknown, would you buy it, even if it was really cheap?

there is a breakers yard in York where there are cars there and you dont know the mileages.

How about phoning Reco-Prop to ask if they can repair/replace the CV joints on your drive shafts? http://www.reco-prop.com/index.htm

I have replaced with parts like intercooler, top air pipe etc. From Colt VI CZ2. Identical as those for Smart with Mitsubishi and Smart number on them.

I do high mileage like 35k miles a year and some parts worn badly. Like windscreen hitted with few rocks on Autobahn. Time to replace that 13 years old glass.

I don't mind used parts. Soon most of those parts will be available only as 2nd hand. You can find really low mileage parts. Easy to say that by looking on them. Time always tell truth.

You have already been given the names of not one, but two, firms that refurbish driveshafts. Why not get prices from them before hunting for used parts.?

I have used the one I suggested, and that is to transmit power from a 300BHP 240 lb ft toque V8

And how many breakers yards have a good reputation?

I used Reco-Prop for a propshaft and they were fine in terms of both customer service and quality of work.
