Not very happy about water in the car.
« on: September 07, 2018, 09:00:18 PM »

G'day all,
We had a really big storm with nonstop heavy rain that lasted for 3 days, and when i had to go out in the car there was a lot of water in the driver and rear right passenger foot space,i wondered where it came from, cos there was no evidence of leaks anywhere, but then today when i opened the drivers door, a lot of water came out of it, well the rain was on that side, so now i know.
I have to drill a few holes in the bottom of the door i think to stop that from happening again.
Anybody have other solutions, please let me know.
Thanx in advance.
Greetings,
Eddie.

There is already a hole there - you need to clean it out as per the guide as there can be a lot of small particles of dirt that over time turns into a muddy slop and it needs to come out

There is a guide

On passed cars "not smart "I have had this and it can also come from the air intake below the windscreen, when the drainage holes get blocked water over flows into the foot wells Via the heater vents . don't know if this happens to a forfour but if cleaning the door drainage does not work I
would look there.

When I got my ForFour the drainage under the windscreen was completely blocked on one side, but I never had water ingress, so I don't think this is an issue on the ForFour. Though if it was really bad, who knows?

G'day all and thanx for the replies.
Believe it or not but i got 16 liters of water out of the foot space on the driver and right backseat drivers foot space, and there is more in the frame under the drivers seat that i could not get too.
i had a look at the rubbers that seal the windows on the outside, and they are not the best anymore and do not seal well, so they need to be replaced i think, and that is if i can get them.
Its a bit of a PITA but i realize its a 14 year old car.
Greetings,
Eddie.

Whilst you try to source replacement seals, give the old one's
a good wipe with a rag soaked/sprayed with silicone as that
will soften them and possibly help them seal again.

Aa stated in previous posts, any rain that gets passed the door
outer window seals should drain out of the holes in the bottom
of the doors.  And, as per the link in cecil's previous post, poke
a zip-tie/cable-tie up through the holes and wiggle them about
to try and shift/clear any build up of sludge that accumulates inside...
even pouring loads of warm water down the outside of the window
so that it can drain down inside and help to loosen any crud/sludge
so that it flows out of the holes clean and clear.

If you look from under the car there is a big plastic plug at what should be the lowest part of the footwell. Perhaps that would be the easiest way to get the water out of the footwell?
Carpets smell really bad if they stay damp... Sadly known from experience.

The door is not designed to be waterproof - it’s designed sonwater passes through

You need to fix that first :)

Try some of those moisture bags (the ones that soak up moisture then you microwave to dry out)

Steddie- can you confirm you have water inside the door and in the footwells. It sounds like two problems. Do you have the panoramic roof? I ask as that has sometimes caused problems when the drain holes become blocked. Rain must have been really heavy!

G'day again and thanx for all the advice,  i do have a panorama roof and had a look but could not find a trace of water leakage from the roof, and yes the rain was unbelievable heavy for 3 days.
The door is the only place i can think of where the water came from but i will at some stage take off the shuttle panel and check or the tray under the windscreen wipers is clear of rubbish and the outlet not blocked and will also do the silicone trick, as the rubber is dried out a fair bit from the hot sun here in the summer.
Greetings,
Eddie.

I would check the drainage under the windscreen as when they block water once it gets to the air intake hight then it overflows into the heater  and on too the floor, you get loads of water as all the water from the windscreen goes in,  also this use to happen only in very heavy rain as the vent can hold quite some water before it gets to the point where it then all goes into the car. again this was not on my smart but symptoms very much the same.

if your suggesting the water leak is coming in from the pollen filter housing, there would be 2 issues.
1. the pollen filter would be soaked, easily checked.
2. the water would rest on the left side of the car as the pollen filter is located on the left side on right hand drive forfours. but Eddie's water leak is on the right side of the car and New Zealand is a right hand drive market
