PHOTOBUCKET....at it again. ACTION required !
« on: March 16, 2020, 02:08:06 PM »

All....
I just got an email from the money grabbing folks that run Photobucket...
They have advised me that I have gone over my limit....
and that I need to pay $5 per month for the next 6 months to keep my
account !
All rather strange as I have not added anything to my account in well
over a year.

I then noticed that the email was not addressed to me personally
but to the 'community'...as in everyone with an account.
  :o   >:(

WHAT TO DO NOW THEN.

As they have not disclosed a time limit I suggest that everyone
who has pictures/photos on photobucket (including any that are
use on this Forum), is that as soon as possible you download/copy
them off Photobucket and either store them and/or find another
hosting site for them, and then remove everything off Photobucket
and close your account with them.

If ANY of your photo's/pictures that are on Photobucket are used
on the Forum then please please PLEASE edit all your posts that
have them with the new URL address.  We need to keep the forum
up to date and with as many of the photos'/pictures as possible
as a pciture says a thousand words....and is far better than just
the printed word for nigh on all the jobs etc that we need to do
with/for our adorable ForFours.

PLEASE ACTION THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
I/we are aware that this may take sometime and effort on nigh
on everyones part.....but it is vital/necessary for the future of
the Forum.

Thanks in advance, G

Not spam as far as I can ascertain..
The email came from 'community@photobucket.com'
How do I check that out ?

And...as I posted earlier, who else can one trust to host
all the hundreds of pictures I have on the Forum ?
And do they charge for the pleasure ?

I’m using imgur - works well

But you’ll have to upload them all again

If using the app it shouldn’t be too hard (just time consuming)

I’d focus on a post/guide at a time

Save all pics (press, hold, save to camera roll)

Open imgur, new post, name it as per guide, add all pics you just saved

Use the imgur links to add back into the guide.

Tbh though nothing is safe unless we self host the images on the site

I agree re self hosting, but the problem is that the software
for the Forum only supports adding pictures at the end of a post
and not anywhere else within the post, which is or can be a pain
when one is reading it as a Guide as we do at the moment.
It's not a problem for any normal post in a thread.

I'll see if I can arrange a meet with our hosting 'guru' to see
if he can spare any of his somewhat busy time to chat with him
on this topic....but I wouldn't put too much hope in him being
able  to hunt out an alternative.  We'll just have to see JJ.

Meantime...good news.....I challenged Photobucket re my
'supposed' going over my limit and I have been advised that
they made an error and I'm quite within my limit that I pay for.
So no panic at the moment for me then.   ;D

Yes you can!! BUT it's a bit of a compromise:

You can add the picture as an attachment and it DOES get saved at the end, yes. However if you then right-click on the pic, select 'copy image address' and edit the post, you can use then use the image address in a normal IMG tag to place it anywhere you want.
e.g
[ I M G ] https://www.forfour.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6894.0;attach=1509;image [/ I M G]

I just tried this out on a post on this very site (previewed it, not saved it) and it does indeed work. You can place the image anywhere you want in the post, once it's uploaded.

Only thing is, it might still show the image at the bottom of the post it was uploaded to, as well.

(full disclosure, I'm a professional PHP web developer in my day job)

PS here's the proof using the example I gave above:

Voila. An uploaded image right in the middle of a post.

The question is, if you can then edit the post to remove the originally attached image, without it deleting the image from the server as well. If so, you can basically upload the images you need, edit the post to position them anywhere you want with normal IMG tags, and then remove the attachemnts after, so as to not have them all at the bottom of the post too...

Or, you could have a single thread for uploading the images to, and then just paste the image addresses inside IMG tags to place them in the right place on the original 'how-to' posts (as I have just done above).

I'll happily try it out with your permission and provide a guide if it works.

.....The question is, if you can then edit the post to remove the originally attached image, without it deleting the image from the server as well....

I see and understand (99% anyway) what you're saying....but as for
the part quoted above....It's not possible to remove the original image
from out of the original post as it doesn't actually show within it when
I try to modify any of them...I've tried, believe me.
Yes you can copy the image location from an 'active' post and then add
it into the original post with the img brackets, but as you can't see the
original embedded link (for want of better words) to remove it, then
you'll have 2 images show up when you eventually click 'post'.

As JJ says....it's looking like I'll have to copy all the original images
that I have stored on my computers over to IMJUR, then replace all
the original Photobucket links in all of my posts with the new one's,
and finally delete the one's on Photobucket and close my account.
BUT...that will take me a 'lifetime' to achieve as I have a mega amount
of images in posts I've put up on the forum, so I'd have to go through
each and every thread to find them one at a time and replace them !
It would/will be a long and slow process.....very long.
