Thinking of getting a Brabus
« on: April 08, 2021, 08:26:00 PM »

Hi,
I have got a 450 and a Brabus is for sale nearby which has got me thinking about changing.
How does the ride compare to my std 450 ?
Is the cambelt change a diy challange?(I have done the camchain insitu on a 450)
Any instructions for this?
Oil and filter every 6500?
Mileage @75,000.
Any other main things to be asking about?
Thanks

Check mot history, very quick on gov website. Also ask local smart specialists if they know of any looked after ones for sale. I was looking to buy one but circumstances have changed so will have to wait.

I have checked on the MOT history and it looks Ok .
It is 13 years old so should have had 2 cambelt changes but seller has no record.

'should have had 2 cam belts'

if in doubt get the seller to have it replaced OR get the price down at least £600 so you can get it done. given the amount of room you have to play with, id recommend getting a specialist to replace the cam belt. whilst your there, you might as well have the water pump replaced.

there is a sticker on the drivers 'B' pillar stating the oil should be changed every 6500 miles.

MOT history means squat in my eyes. it could have had a lot of issues, all of which might have been rectified. just because a car has had a list as long as your arm of failures doesn't mean its not been looked after. iv seen cars which have failed spectacularly but the owners have spent the money and replaced what needed replacing, EVERY YEAR. i know of one customer who's yearly service and MOT bill comes to around £3-4000.

also given that most Forfour Brabus change owners like fast fashion, its bound to have some abuse and neglect. my brabus, which im breaking has had 11 registered owners in 15 years, but listening to the previous owner its had at least 12+

Cam belt change on a Brabus 454 is not a DIY job.....
Ok, some have done it, but space it very limited, and more importantly
the cams have to be locked in position as it is ultra easy to get it/them
one 'tooth' out and then you will have real running issue problems.
So...as mr.singh has stated, it's best to leave it to a good Smart
independant to do it and rest assured it's been done....plus...have the
cam belt tensioner changed too.  Some say change the water pump
while the rest is being done, but it's not an essential/must do.

Oh and yes...an MoT doesn't mean the car has been 'looked after'....

Mot can tell you about up coming bills there is one brabus with notes about rear bushes which I understand is costly, also one out there with a lot of advisories about rust on struts and suspension. Again expensive.

Cam belt change is not heavier then on other cars. It's a 4hours job and have enough space for working hands, when you release engine mount on that side.

Except the typical things from all old cars (like underfloor rust, suspension wear etc) and from all 454 (like door cable, makrolon surface wear, wheel bearings, gearbox etc), you should check TurboCharger (not noise and not oil coming out to air side) and exhaust manifold.

Otherwise it's thanks jesus a Mitsubishi CZT, from a time when Mitsu build great cars. So no problem at engine side.

Best regards
Bari

one tester may note the rear bushes where as the next year they may not pick up on them.

my red 1.1 had an advisory for rear spring corroding yet they looked in good condition.

my SB3 had advisories for spring corroding, the following year nothing.

what one tester sees may not be seen by another or even picked up the following year.

the MOT certificate isnt worth the paper it is printed on. the paper is probably worth more, this is the EXACT quote, word for word an MOT tester told me. a car could drive out with a pass and down the road and a bulb might blow... iv even known owners swap wheels with good tyres and then swap  them back just to get a pass. one tester told me he knew an owner who bought a pair of lower arms, showed and assured the tester that they would be replaced, the following year, it failed on the same items by the SAME tester. turns out the owner bought the arms, told the tester that they would be replaced, and then returned the lower arms once he got the pass certificate.

iv had it where our MOT test station has failed a car on play in suspension parts and when we have serviced it no play was found.

MOT history means diddly squat!

I have had a reply from the owner saying it has a camchain so have decided to give this one a miss (have replied saying all Brabus have a cambelt).
I understand about mot's being a snapshot of condition so take the history with a pinch of salt but still find it interesting to look.
I am not sure if I "need" a Brabus :-)
Thanks for all the replies as it is useful to get info from forum members.

I also said to that seller that it had a timing belt, he said his mechanic said timing chain so put me off.
