What mods can I do to get more power out of my little 1.1 ?
I'll be getting an ITG air filter possibly but that's about as far as I got.
I did have a tickling for the Brabus exhaust but at £500 I thought was too expensive,
it would have been cheaper if I bought a 1.3 or 1.5 as they don't need the mid section
of the pipe, and I dont think that putting 2-4 bottles of fuel flush will help performance
as I refuel with V-power all the time, it clears the engine well as I found on my old
City Coupe when I thrashed it with I think 5x330ml bottles of Fotre fuel treatment.
I'm thinking about drilling my airbox but I'm not sure if that will help increase
performance or it will decrease it with it sucking in hotter air from the engine bay.

Stainless steel free flowing exhaust with sports CAT and manifold? Without the
manifold it will be (should be) cheaper than a Brab or Remus backbox - they don't add
power just noise and weight.

ITG, K&N, Pipercross et al will add a modest increase in power, a couple of bhp.
Maybe an induction kit with NACA duct on the bonnet for a cold air feed.

As for fuel choice, V-Power won't add much to a forfour petrol engine, BP Ultimate
does the same job (imo) - cleans the engine and gives an all round better response.

I believe you can remap the N/A engines, I think BIG does it but only adds a few bhp
maybe a max of 15bhp. (or should that be 1.5bhp !)

Apart from that, you could strip the interior, the aircon, electric windows, carpets,
soundproofing etc etc and roll on magnesium alloys.

1/ ITG filter is a good idea (whether you keep the car or not), and it may well release a couple of BHP.
2/ Drilling the airbox  ! Not much point, unless you intend to dril one large hole and duct cold air from somewhere into it....
    prefereably a hole the same size as the flexible air feed pipe fed from down by the pax side front indicator.
3/ Remap...to be honest, for a 1.1 it's not worth the expense.
4/ And as for stainless steel free flowing exhaust with sports CAT and manifold.....loadsa nwonga for not a great deal more oomph.

My advice...run your car as is (with an ITG), and in the meantime the money you save on Road Tax and Insurance and fuel, put towards a 1.3

Nah it'll work out far to expensive. It'll be cheaper to buy a forfour with a 1.5 engine.
It may be an easy swap but I'll need the appropriate ECU, wiring harness, driveshafts, gearbox, letting the DVLA know about the new engine and
then forking out more money for my insurance because its been 'modified' from standard.
I think I'll just put in the ITG air filter and leave it there... unless there is an induction kit for the 1.1 which I dont know about.

I went down this hole modding a 1.1 with my CZ1 Colt I had as a 1st car.. looked into everything, brought brake upgrades (drums to disks on rear)
it's not worth spending to much on it to be honest. I assume the ForFour 1.1 is the same as the Colt ??

74BHP ?  I had an air filter and an exhaust on mine and when hub dynoed it, it put out 74bhp so no gain at all. Save your money, and if you do buy
mods, buy some that can be put on your next car

The 1.1 in the ForFour is the same, I've already got discs on the rear, which is nice.
I'm still tempted by an ITG air filter though !

Maybe look at an induction kit instead? You're a mechanic, I reckon you should be able to fabricate some form of free flowing air intake...

does the air box intake have an air flow sensor on it like on the BRAB??

The MAP sensor is on the throttle body, so you have no problems. You can put the filter straight on the throttle body, or as far away from it as you wish. I was thinking of a cold air intake that would collect air from a scoop placed where the intercooler on a diesel or Brabus is.  But placing it so low would mean that more dust and possibly water would reach the filter. Another possible high pressure area is between the headlight and the fog light. If you fancy drilling a hole there and putting a belmouth in, it would be subjected to high pressure, would be facing forward and would be sufficiently high off the ground not to ingress water or suck in too much dust.

Does the 1.1 have the air box feed pipe that goes from the front grill, over the radiator and into the air box ??

I don't think there is enough room to place it directly onto the throttle body...
and quite rightly...if placed there it would suck in warm/hot air from the radiator....
not such a good idea. Bad in fact. A cold air intake from where the intercooler would
be mounted as on a diesel/Brabus would be ideal...so long as you end the feed pipe
a good inch or 2 away from the induction filter. That way any water etc that got up
it would spill out before it got to the filter.  A hole between the headlight/foglight....
not very prettty......and would weaken the panel.

But on a 1.1  is all that effort really worth it for perhaps just 2 or 3 extra bhp....seriously ?
If you want that extra power......get a 1.3  !
