Im curious - I want to purchase a product called KiwiWifi.

But the seller wants to know if the Smart Forfour is OBD-II certified because I said to him I don't  want to buy something thats not going to work (especially at $200NZ)


Anyone know if its certified at OBD-II?

Hello Aaron,
The port that you are referring to is a J1962 connector.  These connectors have been installed in most vehicles since OBD has been around as OBD 1 and OBD 1.5 use the same port, but are not OBD II compliant.
 
Our units are compatible with CAN bus, however the CAN bus protocol needs to be OBD II compliant.  If the manufacturer is not using a standard CAN bus protocol (every manufacturer is different) then our unit may not function properly.
 
Just an FYI, there have not been any standards set for vehicles made for the Asian market for diagnostics.  The US standard was set in 1996, and the EU standard was set in 2001.  Not all manufacturers have complied with these regulations as well.  Some vehicles did not become OBD II compliant until 2004 or later in the EU.

Sorry but how is Android a "step backward"? It is on a par with iPhone/iPad if not superior due to the freeware and open source development tools available. Oh and they support Flash too

I would look into a Honeycomb (latest) or Froyo (v. 2.2) running Android tablet/slate if you want a cheap option for onboard diagnostics.

Mate you've taken what I said out of context. FOR ME it would be a step backwards because my mates run iPhones as well. I'm not arguing if android can do the job, I know it can. But how it does it is what I'm I'm getting at.
I'm not arguing the merits of price tags for androids (I've only said about prices for the obd-ii hardware).

Sorry wasn't jumping down your throat, its just that you could have a nice shiny 7in screen displaying your data wirelessly for a fraction of the cost but with more functionality. Plus you could have sat nav and a media player all in one unit

Sorry if i came off as though i were snapping - I currently live on a farm and I have a mouse in my room that has woken me up at this ungodly hour... Again!

I was thinking of having a Samaung Galaxy tablet 10.1 but
a. They're not available  yet (though at this point may be available around the time NZ gets stock again for iPad)
B. I don't know what kind of media player I'd be able to use ( I dont like anything I have to manually add bits too (like manually scanning for music)
And c. Lack of apps

Ps love that picture. If I was going to leave my device in the car. That's what id do!

I wish I could try a sgt to see if it would be decent enough..
